About the Author I was born in Chicago, 1941. I fell hopelessly in love with the androgynous polychrome Quan Yin in the Nelson Aitkins Museum of Art in Kansas City when I was 12. A series of interconnected character portraits that are alternately abstract, impressionist and realist capture both the interior and exterior lives of the characters portrayed. Those lives intertwine in ways that are sometimes direct and sometimes quite subtle. Character development and descriptive elements of the environments they inhabit are extremely well portrayed. The author does an almost uncanny job of allowing the characters to speak in their own, highly unique voices and, as the author's other creative en-devours would lead one to expect, the descriptive passages are both painterly and poetic.Given my personal preferences regarding novels I would have liked to see a bit of a more traditional, tighter "plot." However, though the plot is not very explicit, and what there is of it develops slowly, I do not think that a dramatic and explicit plot were the author's intention with this work and that Mr. Russell has made a powerful presentation of his vision.I enjoyed this book very much. Any chapter could have been presented as a short story or a poem and been nearly as powerful as the novel in total; there is not a wasted paragraph or chapter in the entire work and I recommend Ari Figue's Cat as beautifully constructed exploration of life in both its meta-physical interior depth and a reminder of the profound beauty that can be found in what can easily be overlooked as mundane if we are not careful to be attentive to our life in the day to day here and now.

In a book that reads like a many-faceted jewel shines Jacob Russell manages to employ, in "Ari Figue's Cat," a variety of experimental literary strategies in order to tell an autobiographically-tinged story about Philadelphia, mainly - it seems - in times past. There is some complexity as to how the novel is arranged that may be a little daunting to someone who is used to the dull world of conventional linear story-telling. But if one gets over this moderate hurdle and dives deeper into the book one is able to observe a story involving a captivating group of characters: scions of nearly ancient Pennsylvania Quaker families, rootless cosmopolitans, lost barroom pool players, and politically active roommates. Chief among the characters is perhaps the city of Philadelphia itself, which is possibly the hardest of all of the figures to get to know. Employing "One story after another, back stories, reminiscences..." (as Russell literally writes at one point) the author makes a very good case for the idea that certain tales may be better told in unconventional or alternative fashions - especially if the core of a particular story involves so much of an enigma. Who, after all is the girl making the snow angels on the sidewalk? This book being boldly and well-crafted, one is invited to enjoy the ride of Russell's language as much as any specific hard-edged (and oh-so-conventional) destination. A good first read for someone looking to explore experimental or post-modern fiction.

By Jonathon Todd I could talk about the wonderful images, and the free flow of language that this wonderful book posses, the way it culls a variety of thoughts and questions as you read it: but I will say more than anything it is a book you loose yourself in (which becomes more interesting as the book itself deals with identity). As someone who reads constantly (and who is a writer himself) I find no greater mark of a works hold on me then when as cliche as it sounds I can not put it down. And, I mean this in a deeper sense too, where I found myself doing my day to day actions, still carrying in my thoughts as if the book had become my reality even if only for the time it took to read this. That has only happened a few times in my life, but when it does, I find it to be a book that I will come back to again and again, and I can't wait to come back to Ari Figue's Cat and meld into that world again.
