The years of the Great Depression were hard on the families of the Great Plains and often it was only the tenacity of individuals who kept the American dream alive. This book is skillfully written and gripping and the characters are endearing; but many time it is the landscape that takes center stage, the beautiful but desolate Sandhills of Custer County, Nebraska. Family conflict, economic hardship, dust-storms, religious tunnel vision, rattlesnakes and a baby found dead in his cradle wreck havoc on the McCloud family. Can the homespun spirituality of a proud and decent Irish mother give her children the strength to endure? This is an ageless tale that is at once a classic Nebraska yarn and a story as universal as it is compelling. Highly recommended!

Big Sky is the story of the struggles of an Irish family trying to make a living in the Sandhills of Nebraska during the Great Depression. I had a hard time putting this book down. I enjoyed reading about each family member and couldn't help but cheer them on as they conquered the unbearable conditions of life on a farm during a time of uncertainty and innocence. I'm looking forward to reading more from this wonderful author!

Her writing helped make some human sense of the trials of our forefathers as they struggled not only with adversity of ever changing climate, but also with the drudgery of trying to make it through the years of the dust bowl, excellent reading!
