The difference that being female makes to the diagnosis, life and experiences of a person with an Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) has largely gone unresearched and unreported until recently. In this book Sarah Hendrickx has collected both academic research and personal stories about girls and women on the autism spectrum to present a picture of their feelings, thoughts and experiences at each stage of their lives. Outlining how autism presents differently and can hide itself in females and what the likely impact will be for them throughout their lifespan, the book looks at how females with ASD experience diagnosis, childhood, education, adolescence, friendships, sexuality, employment, pregnancy and parenting, and aging. It will provide invaluable guidance for the professionals who support these girls and women and it will offer women with autism a guiding light in interpreting and understanding their own life experiences through the experiences of others.

Review This book adds to our knowledge by providing an insightful, sensitive analysis of the pattern of behaviours in females from childhood through to old age... This book endorses my clinical experiences in working with females in the autism spectrum and validates the importance of diagnosis at any time in a person's life. Therefore I would highly recommend this book for all professionals involved in diagnosis and supporting girls and women in the autism spectrum. -- from the foreword by Dr Judith Gould, Consultant Clinical Psychologist and Director of The Lorna Wing Centre for Autism

Diagnosed at 53 By Nellie Moore I purchased this book earlier today when I found it while looking for books with a focus on women and girls on the Autism Spectrum. I've been reading it this afternoon and I'm happy that it's what I hoped it would be. Since being diagnosed in late 2014 I've been looking for and reading any book that I could find with a focus on women and girls. There are not that many, most, until recently, focusing on children and adolescents on the Spectrum, often with a focus on males. Books written from our perspective as girls, adolescents and women on the Spectrum are much newer on the scene and very welcome. I look forward to finishing this book and I'm grateful that it, and others like it are being written. I've pre ordered Life on the Autism Spectrum - A Guide for Girls and and Women, which will be out in September.

This is an excellent book written by someone who is also on the spectrum themselves. Very informative. I highly recommend this to any woman who believes she may be struggling with autism and is looking information specific to autism in women.

By Tania A.Marshall, M.Sc., Assoc. MAPS There is a currently, and will be for some time, a knowledge explosion on the topic of female Autism. That is because there exists a female Autism crisis with researchers and practitioners only recently understanding that girls and women have Autism and that there is a lack of knowledge, assessment tools, interventions, support tools and resources for females. Many females, even those working in the helping industry, may not know they have Autism because they compare themselves to the male profile or the stereotypical female, as the author Sarah Hendrickx so aptly discusses. Hendrickx discusses the variety of explanations that may explain the current gender bias, including the possibility of creating a new set of diagnostic criteria for females. I would welcome this as I see far too many girls and women who are misdiagnosed and receiving inappropriate treatment and support, from either end; those who have self-diagnosed and are on the Spectrum and those who have self-diagnosed and are not on the Spectrum. Hendrickx' book helps to expand the narrow and stereotypical view of Autism and how Autism present in females across the lifespan. The book is a combination of research and personal experiences of Autistic females themselves. Congratulations Sarah on a much-needed book by a practitioner working in the field and also on the Spectrum herself. There is a huge need for more books, research and resources by clinicians and professionals whose years of experience can assist in accurately portray the complex heterogeneity, the sub-types and the Spectrum of traits, characteristics and abilities. Thank-you Sarah for your contribution.Tania A. Marshall, M.Sc., Assoc.
