Charles and Sarah are a typical New York creative class couple -- he's in finance, she works at a hipster small press, yet both are indie-rock East Village veterans who aren't above snorting a little heroin on the weekends. But when they decide to take the logical next step and buy a condo in one of the glass-and-steel skyscrapers now dotting the waterfront of Williamsburg, their lives start to fall apart almost the moment after they sign their mortgage; and this is to say nothing of their creepy neighbors, their possibly haunted apartment, job crises in both their industries, and former friends still in Manhattan who are determined to pull them back into the debauchery. A touching ode to the a--holes ruining Brooklyn, this literary debut of "the Millennial John Updike" is a funny yet wistful dramedy about young urban life during the Great Recession, and you do not need to be a New Yorker yourself to enjoy his smart insights about city living and growing older...although that certainly doesn't hurt.

Decent read, terrible ending By LP I received a review copy from the publisher, who hails his author as a "John Updike" for the millennial generation. The inside cover teaser summary of the book is so absurd it sounds like it must be the worst book ever written: "he's in finance, she works at a hipster small press, yet both are indie-rock East Village veterans who aren't above snorting a little heroin on the weekends. But when they decide to take the logical next step and buy a condo in one of the glass-and-steel skyscrapers now dotting the waterfront of Williamsburg, their lives start to fall apart."It was not nearly as bad as the absurd blurb would indicate. The book takes place over the course of a week when Charles and Sara move in to their new condo, and the author does have some amusing insights into New York real estate, conspicuous consumption, income differentials, and what stories people tell themselves about who they are and how those delusions can become problematic. The writing is not bad -- it's not John Updike, but it's not bad. The central characters are well-developed, although some of the side characters are clearly cardboard, and the plotting needs work. I get what the author was going for with these random asides that peter out, but it doesn't quite work. I would give it three stars, except for my unhappiness with the ending (SPOILERS in the next paragraph) ...***SPOILERS***The author does a very good job building a sense of unease throughout the book -- the relationship is failing, Sara is losing her job, there's an evil voodoo mask (little heavy-handed, that) and a scary balcony that Charles is afraid he'll fall off; there are creepy neighbors and unsettling interactions, drugs returning to now-clean Charles's life, with what felt like an accelerating race towards the housewarming party where all these threads would come together in catastrophe ... but instead we get a happy ending where everything works out fine. And nobody falls off the balcony. I was, honestly, incredibly disappointed; all of the dark foreshadowing and created unease pointed inexorably towards a tragic ending; instead, it's the ending of some entirely different book, where basically none of the raised problems are dealt with -- they're all just ignored, sometimes with a character thinking, "She decided not to worry about that anymore," -- and then everyone is happy watching the sunrise and glad it all worked out. It was an enormous letdown and ruined the rest of the book.

By Amazon Customer The author portrays a perfect and entertaining portrait of this particular microcosmos of New York City - A hip couple perpetually jumping the fence between that spark of youthful impulsiveness and adult-like responsibility. As a native New Yorker, I'm forever looking for a good read that takes place in, and depicts an accurate picture of the City - From its elegance down to its obscure grittiness; all while making sure to include plenty of the "uneventful aspects" that are really what endeavors a true New Yorker to remain in-love with the City. The author certainly knows the City. While many "New York" authors are guilty of providing laundry lists of details for the sake of demonstrating how many obscure facts they've collected in the past number of years, Daniel Falatko is capable of painting his picture in an organic manner - providing us the facts, locations and atmosphere of a scene without disrupting the plot.

By ManagedDecline Daniel Falatko's debut novel is a compelling and disturbing read. Touches of Updike? Sure, perhaps in the nuanced dissection of a relationship tossed around in the currents of its era's socio-economics and culture. But rather than Rabbit grappling with the burgeoning sexual freedoms and consumerism of his time, Condominium sees lost hipster children playing at being grown-ups as they struggle to tessellate the counter-culture ideals of the 60s and beyond with the Gordon Gecko individualism of the 80s. In the cracks that inevitably between the two, Ballardian psychic disturbances begin to fester. The self-loathing of the mortgage slave grows into physical revulsion - echoes of Polanski's Repulsion - at the luxury prison in which our self-proclaimed "creative class couple" find they have incarcerated themselves. As it all falls apart, even the totemic luxury kitchen appliances start to turn against them…
