By Peter Haight I came into this short story expecting a poorly-written pulp novel that hardly would pass as even a fan service. However, what I got far exceeded that!This short story sits at just 20 pages, but each oozes substance and depicts a dark Miami underworld littered with cocaine and blood. The author, Mr. Lyle, crafted a tale that not only stands out in its own right, but tips its proverbial hat to greats like Hotline Miami and Drive, which serve as an inspiration for this story.Hotline centers around a few different characters that all come together at the climax of the plot. Essentially, the story borrows from the plot of Hotline Miami-- masked vigilantes stalk the city and have been actively targeting members of the Russian mob and their associates. One evening, a young man sleeps with a woman he met at a bar that night, and from there, that's when things start to get weird. I won't spoil anything, but this story accomplishes in 20 pages what the games managed to make me feel in a few hours, and I salute the author for writing such a great story.Not quite prose, but a few steps above pulp, this story centers itself right in the happy medium of where a proper crime thriller should be-- oozing substance, with as few words as possible, and with complex characters. All I can say is that I want more! I was a bit upset that there wasn't a printed copy available, so I had my local Staples print me up a copy using the Kindle file. I have plans to adapt this to a short film with some friends, but I have been unable to contact the author for approval.If the author is reading this, please contact me! I would love to discuss this awesome book with you.At any rate-- if you're a fan of the 1980s aesthetic, or you enjoyed the Hotline Miami series of video games, then I can strongly recommend picking this neat little Kindle story up. I would wager that at $3 it's a bit pricey for only about 20 pages, but to me, it is worth it and full of surprises.9/10
