The Beautiful Ashes (A Broken Destiny Novel), by Jeaniene Frost

From School Library Journal Twenty-year-old Ivy is looking for her younger sister Jasmine after she suddenly disappears. During her search, Ivy discovers the truth behind the strange visions that have afflicted her since childhood—she is able to see into the demon realm, and this just happens to be where Jasmine is trapped. With the guidance of the brooding, too-perfect male specimen Adrian, Ivy will stop at nothing to rescue her sister. However, there's a catch. It turns out that Ivy is the last descendent of the biblical hero David and is the only one that can find and wield a powerful relic to triumph over evil. Adrian is battling demons of his own with a dark past riddled with secrets that deeply conflict with his powerful attraction to Ivy. Unfortunately, there isn't a lot of world- or character-building to be had, and the plot can be groan-inducingly predictable at times. Ideally, the sequels will delve a bit more deeply to give the series some substance. Still, the pacing is tight and readers should fly through the story. Reluctant readers as well as fans of the "Twilight" books and other paranormal romances will eat this one up. A slightly steamy romance scene and the occasional curse word make this appropriate for older teens.—Kimberly Castle-Alberts, Hudson Library & Historical Society, OH

56 of 61 people found the following review helpful. Not what I had expected. By Shera (Book Whispers) ****Review copy received for an honest review.****The Beautiful Ashes (Broken Destiny, book 1) by Jeaniene FrostPart of me likes to believe that if I hadn't read The Dark World by Cara Lynn Shultz, or any of the other-world-with-demon books, I would have loved The Beautiful Ashes more. The reality is, it's just boring and quite honestly it does not bring more then two new things to the angel/demon genre. First was Frost's signature wit. The second thing is the mythology, while it's not 100% unique the bloodlines part is fun and I enjoyed Frost's interpretation and alternate view on all that biblical mythology. (And you'll want to have a certain Lady Gaga song handy.)While I was excited that Ivy would be a different kind of lead for Frost, I soon realized that if Ivy was put in a line up with many other YA/NA characters out there I couldn't pick her out. Maybe if she cracked a joke, but other then that she doesn't stand out. Even with things I love such as bravery, loyalty, and perseverance to put her on my good side. Ivy isn't a bad character, and if anything it's nice to have a smart and strong lead. The genre needs them! What hurt my connection to Ivy is that there isn't much development and then at page 11 the male lead enters. He just happens to have broken in to her hotel and is waiting for Ivy, who just got attacked. She isn't worried, nope she instead thinks this:"I knew I should turn around, open the door and run, preferably while screaming. That was the only logical response, but I stood there, somehow unafraid of my intruder. Great. My survival instincts must've secretly made a suicide pact." No Ivy dear. What you're survival instincts are suffering from is what I like to call the plague of storytelling: Instalove.Even after being kidnapped by this stranger, AKA love interest Adrian, nothing. Stop it authors!!! Stop it. Love isn't easy and I don't want that in my books! Make it epic, passionate, and totally worth the wait. Not wham or you're being tugged by some magical connection, but you're love transcends that connection. That's telling and the easy way out. The fact is I know Frost can bring the heat!!!Besides my eye rolling over the romance, and my resignation that I would not be joining the swooning I'm sure other readers will feel, I still had hope for the world. Yet, that didn't deliver despite the cool mythology. Everything was predictable and the demon realms have been done quite a few times, so if you're going to add to the genre blow me away! The plot was also predictable. Once the core of the mythology was introduced at page 32 and who Ivy is descent of it all becomes transparent. In the blink of an eye I knew who Adrian was descended from, and the drag out of that mystery was too much. (Which is lucky because jamming out to a certain Gaga song made my reading enjoyment spike!)The plot of withholding information from the lead and then slowly revealing it didn't work, because if you're a reader of the genre you know the drill. Especially coming from the male lead who is "doing it to protect" Ivy's fragile mind, and leads to her almost getting killed(s). So when the big twist, or the "betrayal", came a long I didn't even bat an eye lid. In fact, the twist was given away within only a few pages of 32.What I do believe could have saved this book was if it had read like a New Adult, and not Young Adult. Besides Ivy being of college age, there is nothing NA about this book. Nothing. Yes, I've come to expect that New Adult titles can have range from content level of Young Adult, to Adult, and even risqué matter such as erotica. For me I was hoping that Frost had chosen NA to bring the maturity of an adult title to the fun of the Young Adult genre, with a heavy dose of dark grit for the demon world. As said before some are going to find this pretty dark, however if you're bread and butter is dark fantasy it's like the kiddy pool.In the end I think this is a promising start. The mythology is there, and I do want to see if the next book can step things up now that all of that the first book stuff is out of the way. Especially in the character development, there's hope for Ivy. But Adrian is just another male heart throb I'm just supposed to be swooning over. Still I believe many Frost fans will be happy with this, and Frost newbies. If you're a long time reader and good at predicting plots, and rely mainly on the characters to get you through, this might not hit the spot.Sexual Content: Some mild talk of rape and torture, mild sexual content and plenty of humor.2/5- Average/disappointing, library check-out.Originally reviewed at Book Whispers.

By RabidReads Reading this book was a foregone conclusion for me because, well, it's Jeaniene Frost, and that pretty much says it all in my opinion. I even skimmed the blurb which I NEVER do because New Adult isn't really my genre, and I wanted to make sure that I knew what I was getting in to. Unfortunately the synopsis is rather vague, and I didn't realize that this story was actually about Heaven & Hell until I had reached the point of no return. Angels are by far my least favourite supe, so THE BEAUTIFUL ASHES' saving grace was the fact that it revolved mostly around demons, and again... it's Jeaniene Frost. I'd even go so far as to say that it's a NA version of SUPERNATURAL--the protagonists are driving around in a black car ('68 Challenger) with an arsenal of weapons in the trunk searching for a special (Colt) slingshot. Now, I'm not claiming that Adrian is hotter than Dean Winchester because that would be a bold faced lie, but the world, characters, and writing were excellent, as always because, yup--Jeaniene Frost. The very foundation of the BROKEN DESTINY universe is in itself somewhat of a spoiler, and although I'm sure that there will be plenty of reviewers who'll spill the beans, I won't be one of them. So, please excuse my vagueness, but I loved how the author selected a specific religious story, and built her mythology around it. One of my main problems with `angel books' is the whole Heaven vs. Hell plot line; it doesn't matter if it's vampires, werewolves, or witches because in the end it always comes down to good fighting evil. And, don't get me wrong, that is ultimately what THE BEAUTIFUL ASHES is about, but the story is also more personal because Frost has upped the stakes. Meet Adrian, a reformed Demon prince who's destined to screw up (anti-hero fan girls, REJOICE!!).Ivy was an interesting character who I can see growing on me over time; she's young and naive, but if you can see past her rookie mistakes you'll notice that she's also tenacious, and tough as nails. Ten days ago this girl was living a typical twenty year olds life, then her sister goes missing, her parents are killed, and no, she's not crazy. Demon realms exist. All things considering, I think she did pretty darned good! This book isn't entirely angel-free, but Zach didn't really make an impression on me either way. At least he wasn't preachy (my #1 `angel book' pet peeve). I liked Costa well-enough however, I'm not overly confident of his chances at survival, so I tried not to get too attached. Demetrius was convincing as this series' big bad, and I look forward to him and Ivy eventually butting heads. The ending was predictable and rushed; betrayal and Ivy having to hunt down the other Demon killing weapons were foregone conclusions. THE BEAUTIFUL ASHES was sometimes gory, rarely sweet, and 100% Jeaniene Frost!

16 of 19 people found the following review helpful. Readers will either love or hate this book By Kris *** The Beautiful Ashes has some potentially offensive content highlighted in my review. I'd recommend taking note of them before you dive in ***The Beautiful Ashes presents a haunting world on the brink of a supernatural war. Ivy's situation feels reminiscent of that of Aislinn from Melissa Marr's Wicked Lovely series. Both have been able to see the supernatural world for as long as they can remember, and once they find themselves entangled in it, there is no escape for them. This is a dark and dangerous world that you cannot escape once you've entered it.That said, while the world is one that many may find intriguing, however, the characters are a hit or a miss in this one. Ivy has a character that's pretty out there. One minute, she's calm and collected—and proud of herself for it. The next, she's a raging inferno. This is evident not just in her emotions but how she acts around people. She vascillates between feeling the hots for Adrian and reminding herself that he's a deranged psychopath, not to mention someone who essentially kidnaps her. And with Zach, she alternates between hating on him for not being there in her time of need and reminding herself that his boss (God) lets everything happen for a greater purpose. She can also be pretty manipulative, oftentimes so that she can go off and do something stupid and reckless. Besides the fact that there's little character stability in Ivy, I just couldn't like her because of the way she's so quick to change her mind about people without thinking about the possible reasons for them doing whatever they did that offended her.Romance-wise, I just couldn't feel it. I think if events progressed differently I might have liked Adrian, but the way things are worked against him. First, he kidnaps Ivy, and almost immediately it's apparent that they're hot for each other. While Ivy eventually learns that he's a good guy, it just feels so wrong. I couldn't get rid of the creeps I felt. Maybe it's because of the "forbidden romance" vibe I later got. Maybe it's because it's all about the hots, and I don't see Ivy and Adrian getting in some good bonding time. Nevertheless, while it wasn't for me, I can totally see people loving Ivy and Adrian's characters and cheering them on.What kept me reading on is the world building. The idea of the demon world being interconnected with and drawing upon resources from the human world is really cool, and I enjoyed exploring the different sections of the demon world with Ivy. The world of demons is grotesque and horrifying yet awe-inspiring at the same time. It's impressive how much they've managed to do with what they have. I wish that the demons and their world were better characterized because it's definitely by far the most fascinating part of the novel—for me at least. And while the plot was fairly predictable, it was solid and accomplished what it set out to do, and I appreciate how it has a solid conclusion while setting the stage for the next stage at the same time. The Beautiful Ashes is a book that I can see people either falling madly in love with or having to put down because they can't connect with the characters or the world. If you're interested in the premise but don't like the world so much, I'd recommend checking out The Shadow Reader by Sandy Williams. It too features another world connected to our world with doorways, and it too features a girl who gets kidnapped and finds herself strongly attracted to her kidnapper—but there's more world building and character development. It didn't feel like insta-love like with Ivy and Adrian (though there is a reason given for the connection they feel). The primary differences are that The Shadow Reader has more of an urban fantasy feel and the supernatural creatures are the fae instead of demons and angels.I do have a warning to give about The Beautiful Ashes. The characters, primarily Ivy and Adrian, do say some pretty offensive things. They say whatever comes to mind, and they aren't afraid of offending anyone—demons and angels alike. They also seem to think that God should fix their problems for them and not let such suffering as they have seen in the demon realms go on. At one point, Ivy does admit a belief that God lets things happen for a reason, but for the most part she does seem bitter about what happens. And she isn't afraid to let His messenger know that. . . which results in some very irreverant comments. Some of the things said really shocked me. If you're a Christian, you might want to take this into consideration before you pick this one up. I know that it's a fictional work, but if it's something you'd take great offense to, I probably wouldn't read The Beautiful Ashes on the basis that Ivy is the main character, and you'll be seeing a lot of her.Overall, I did enjoy this novel in spite of my inability to connect with the main characters. The writing flows well, and the world is interesting. And it might have me convinced to pick up the second installment when it comes out.
