For Nancy, Gold Street in Albuquerque is a dream come true: a downtown main street where she can open her own store. Her comfortable, yet predictable, life back in a small Midwestern university town was never like this. But did she pick somewhere too different to open a new business? Nancy quickly depletes her inheritance while setting up her quilt shop, she and her new best friend are torn apart over a man, the other store owners are beyond quirky, and there’s disturbing talk about magic on Gold Street. Plus, the locals have the worst habit of polluting their food with spicy green chile. Did Nancy make a mistake? When the husband of one of her sewing students unexpectedly dies in an accident, can Nancy learn to trust the magic enough to bring everyone together to piece together a special quilt?

Welcome to Gold Street, by Samantha Clark

About the Author Samantha Clark channels her background in commercial real estate and business coaching into the fictional characters of Gold Street. Her love of textiles started as a young child. Growing up in Northeast Ohio her great-grandmother taught her how to quilt when she was five. She would go on to study clothing design at Pratt Institute while working in textile restoration in New York City. She continues to hand sew textile art. Someday, like her character Bernice (named in honor of her great-grandmother), she would like to learn how to combine photography and sewing.

It really exists as a place in Albuquerque, NM. But having read Welcome to Gold Street, she has now set me to wondering over the idea of whether magic is really the fuel of the emerging success of the place. One of the elements of interest in this novel is the variety of ages of the characters that occupy Ms. Clark’s Gold St. as fictional tenants. I could relate to their trials and errors, trials and successes, as they in coached, and otherwise supported each other’s enterprises. In the case of protagonist Nancy, the fledgling business owner who risks her not-so-huge retirement nest egg to start the retail store of her dreams: a quilt making shop. We also meet the students who attend her first workshops in as they learn to express their creativity thorough the craft. One of the standout characters of the story though, is the City of Albuquerque itself. Ms. Clark nails down it’s singularity as Nancy discovers the elements that set Albuquerque apart from everywhere else, by having her discover those unique and sometimes disconcerting elements bit by bit. It’s a fun read that includes elements such as: characters who collide over who gets to snag the available guy, and poses the question about whether the various generations will throw combine their forces in to support one another with the goal of achieving that which really matters.Read it and find out.
