If muscle means murder and the local gangster does not take on partners then Jimmy could also be in a world of trouble. 3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. A sexy detective romp By JB Gadget Full disclosure: I am a friend of the author. When I promised to write a review for his book I asked myself why on earth I would do that? What if it were terrible? What if he couldn't follow a plot-line, figure out who was talking, narrate or even spell? I am very happy to report that none of that is true! Fireball Kiss, Mr. Linick's first novel, turns out to be a well-written, sexy detective romp aimed at men, but that managed hold my female interest. For me, narrative point of view and believable characters have to be there before I can even tolerate a novel. Mr. Linick does a nice job of controlling the narrative point of view by the simple means of following a different character in each chapter. That allows him to use a 3rd person narrator but see into the minds of his characters without, in most cases, breaking the rules of POV. His characters are somewhat stereotypical but true to character and believable within the genre. The men are either big, dumb and bad or big, smart and heroic. The bad guy Mr. Bono -a truly bad guy- alternates between radiating bonhomie and malevolence. But hey, this goes with the genre! While they are typical for a detective novel, each character stays well within his role. My only criticism of a character is that the lead female, Sheila is just too much of a man's dream girl. She's cute, hot and sexy, with tiny waist and hands but curvaceous hips. She is ambitious and just too smart to be a pole dancer in a club. However, Mr. Linick has shown in this first novel that he has skill and will grow as an author so I am sure his female characters will gain depth and realism as he continues to write. His writing is intelligent with few editing errors, mostly towards the end of the book. Would I recommend this novel? Sure thing! It would make a fun read for the beach, or just for a quick, easy break from the daily routine. The beach city setting is colorful, the characters are bigger than life, the violence is controlled, and the sex is fun.

The narrative grabs your attention and does not let go until the end. It is both suspenseful and funny. It is full of tough, violent characters along with a sexy femme fatale, and in these aspects it reminds me of a Mickey Spillane novel. It is a fun read. I look forward to reading the author's next book.
