I really got sucked in to the characters from the first book and wanted to follow their further exploits. While First & Only had a strong plot that held it together, this book is more of a collection of war stories. They read like they may have already appeared in Inferno! (the Warhammer fiction zine). I'm not a big fan of straight combat/action fiction, so this was somewhat disappointing. What saves it is the fact that Abnett is a truly great writer who really rises above this genre of game fiction. The war stories are interrupted by these almost poetic tableaus of the Tanith troops between battles: A soldier obsessively cleaning his gun, the MASH unit quiet and waiting for the coming onslaught of carnage, a General sharing coffee and small talk with the company cook. These bits are very effective counterpoint to the ferocious battles of the surrounding chapters. I'm hooked. I can't wait for the next "Gaunt's Ghosts" book, I just hope that Abnett spends more time developing a compelling story arc and less time on the battlefield reportage.

Sandoc Dan Abnett follows up his first Gaunt's Ghosts novel --- Tanith First and Only --- with Ghostmaker and he does a good job to keep fans of the original hooked with the story. It doesn't rise above the original, but the characterization of major and secondary characters are explored abit further.Ghostmaker also further explains the current Crusade campaign the regiment is on. Politics become an issue as well. Jealousy from other regiments with a more storied history helps add abit of a subplot to the main story. Gaunt and his men are put through the wringer as they accept missions or put into dangerous situations that slowly dwindle their numbers. This is sad and poignant for the fact that without a homeworld to call home anymore, they have no way of replenishing their regiment like other Imperial Guard units. This also means that for every Tanith who falls in battle, more of their homeworld and people's culture disappear. It really adds meaning to the title of Ghostmaker.I would recommend this book to those who have read the first and still contemplating as to whether to pick up this sequel.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. I don't know why people don't like this book, it's awesome! By T. Harris This is the second book in the Gaunts Ghost series, and while it's not the best Ghost's book, it's still a five star book. With a huge number of different characters in the books, I think this was a great idea for the series. Dan abnett was able to give more dimension to the characters and there past, which he brought to life in First and only.Yes, this book is pretty much a collection of short stories and each story focus's on a different character. I personally don't like short stories, but the way Ghostmarker was written was awesome. The thing I don't like short stories is there short! they don't leave any time for character development and in less then an hour they are done. In ghostmaker, the short stories were there to show the character, and show their past, and why they are so attached to it.Gaunt's Ghost is one of my favorite series of novels, and Ghostmaker is a must read for any fan of warhammer 40k or military sci-fi.

One of the most vicious gangsters to ever walk the streets of Newark is free to roam again after serving a 15 year prison sentence. Respected and feared by all, and loved by only a few, the Black Charles Manson was sentenced to death by lethal injection after his conviction for a trail of gruesome murders. The streets were finally able to breathe freely, believing that he would die in prison. His fate was sealed - until he met another Newark legend, the notorious kingpin, the Mayor. The Mayor controlled a great percentage of Newark's heroin trade for only five years as a free man, but as a Federal prisoner, he managed to control that trade for over a decade and a half. From behind bars, the Mayor spent over a quarter of a million dollars cash to secure Manson's freedom. In return for the funding, Manson offered his lifesaver control of his army to use at his disposal. Once the Mayor was finally released, Manson submitted his army over to him as promised. With the Mayor's high quality heroin coupled with Manson's army behind him, they had the perfect recipe for success. Manson issued strict orders for his army to provide 24-hour protection over the Mayor. Somehow his orders were disregarded and the Mayor was assassinated. How or by whom, Manson has not a clue. For years he's sat in prison praying he could get back on the streets to get revenge. Now, his prayers have been answered. As a free man, Manson discovers the code of the streets have changed drastically, and the hit on the Mayor came from within Manson's own camp. A man on a mission; will he track the murderer down and have his revenge, or will he be devoured by the new era of gangsters and meet the same fate as the Mayor? VOLUME 2

By Amazon Customer Block Party 5K1 Book Two by Al-Saadiq Banks picks up right where book one left off and again there is a major adrenaline rush filled within these pages. I thoroughly enjoyed both books, but book two definitely brought everything full circle and the a lot of questions were answered and there many OMG moments that had me anxiously awaiting to see what was going to happen next. What I enjoyed about this series was that this story was set in modern day theme and it made the story line that more enjoyable for me. I read all of the stories in this series and what makes Al-Saadiq different as a writer is because he is emotionally connected with these characters and they are extremely well developed to the point that the dialogue and verbiage are on point, everything is true to life. Bottom line is that this book is a MUST READ!

All hail the king (again) By s. sinclair Just when you think Mr. Banks has done it all, he delivers again. 5k1 is the quintessential street book that vividly captures the tone of the streets today. The Mayor - one of the BEST characters in ANY series- is nearly outdone by the Black Charles Manson. In book two, he lives up to his name! You see why he's so feared. The international twist is a pleasant surprise too, as it deals with a very real social issue. All in all, Mr. BANKS shows why he is the king of this lit s***!

By Vanessa There wasn’t any slow building in this story. It was fast paced the whole way through to the end. The first chapter starts out in Vegas. Madalina meets Cole, has a verbal sparring match with him at the Roulette table than gets herself kidnapped…all that in the first chapter (15 pages). The story didn’t slow down from there either. There were rescues, car chases, and lots of action.I realize I may have judged Madalina a little harshly in the beginning believing her to be a little bit of a twit and naive. In this day in age who doesn’t know about the dangers that can be found on the internet (spyware, hacking, people finder est.). Not to mention who really thinks a bad guy is going to give up after his first attempt fails? Or that they won’t go after her family or friends to get to her? With that said hind sight is 20/20 and things that might seem innocent don’t always turn out to be. My perception of Madalina changed during the story. She is actually a very intelligent, resourceful, strong independent woman. She didn’t bulk and break down when stuff happened and she didn’t totally rely on Cole to save her.Cole came off as a little bit of an @ss but most guys do. Despite being kind of an ass he proves to be trustworthy, dependable, caring and very efficient at what he does. Kind of makes someone wonder what he does for a living. His thoughtfulness at times surprised me. He really surprised me towards the end with the dragon. I wouldn’t have thought he would do that. There were parts of the story that had me laughing out loud, rolling my eyes, talking to the characters and swooning a little too. I burned through this book way to fast. I am defiantly looking at Danielle Bourdon’s other series. If they are anything like her “The Inheritance” series they will not disappoint.I received this book from Goodreads as part of a First Reads giveaway.

Liked The Book and Recommend It By Angel Hatfield **I received an ARC of this story in exchange for an honest review**Madalina went to the Luxor Hotel and Casino. She was there on vacation to suck up the sun and gamble a little. People in Madalina's family and friends usually felt she was a pessimist and skeptic. Madalina and Lianne, her best friend and partner, co-owned a little clothing boutique in LA. A man she had nicknamed as The Grouch had been at her side at the roulette wheel. An Asian man came up to her and told her she had an upgrade to her room. Then another Asian man was at her side as they led her to the outside. A third man appeared and tried to force her into a waiting car. The Grouch came up and hit one of the men, but she was still pushed into the car but managed to get out the other side. The Grouch told her to run. She ran to his car and they left. His name was Cole West and he was going to take her back to LA where he was going to protect her.I found Madalina to be a loyal person. She loves her parents and friends. She's honest and she has a temper. She's stronger than she ever knew. She grew in this story and fell in love. Cole is an organized person. He's usually an honest man. He does what he has to do to get a mission done. He's mentally and physically strong and can think on his feet. He also loves his family.I liked this book and I would recommend it. I look forward to the next book in this series.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Great story & adventure! By AccidentalNewTexan.blogspot I loved the story and plot in this action packed book and am excited to get started on the next installment! It almost reminds me of a "National Treasure" type of hunt and adventure. In all honesty, I didn't care for the dialogue or conversation between Madalina and Cole (or even Lianne) and felt that it was far too formal for some of the situations. I think we need some slang thrown in to make it more "real!" I do, however, think that the storyline makes up for it! I haven't read, or researched for that matter, anything else from this author. I'm curious to find out if it improves in the next installment and will certainly "review" it to let you know the answer! Back to this one, though - It's not loaded down with intense "romance" scenes, so, if you're looking for action and adventure, without explicit content, this is a good one. While there's some room for improvement, I'm giving it a solid 4.5 stars and definitely believe it's worth the read - especially if you're using Kindle Unlimited!

So loving the family in that book and the Italian customs, I wanted to find another. i enjoyed the interaction of the characters in Villa Girls. I have five girlfriends who travel together and the lives of the Villa girls seemed believable. I loved the food throughout the book.

This novel alternated between chapters focusing on Rosie, a young woman who recently lost her parents, and Enzo, a young Italian man on the path to taking over his family's olive oil business. Rosie was insecure but harbored a need to fit in and belong again. The book began when she stumbled into a friendship with Addolorata that landed her in a villa in Spain and resulted in her placement as the fourth girl in the exclusive club, the Villa Girls. When the girls made a pact that they would always make time for similar getaways in the future, I anticipated making several journeys with them to similarly exclusive locales. I had hoped that this would be a book that focused on four friends in the seaside villa like The Summer Girls and The Best Of Us. Instead, the action that took place in villas was minor compared to the time spent following Rosie's life in New York. Aside from Addolorata, the other two villa girls were hardly in the book, although they had plenty of sass to make their presence well known.Rosie was swept into Addolorata's family where food and fighting were normal behavior at the large Sunday family meals. That environment helped Rosie move past her parents' deaths and open up to her friend, and that journey was endearing to watch. Enzo was the dutiful son everyone assumed would take over the family's olive oil farm and the significance of his place in the story wasn't clear until the end. I wasn't overly excited by Enzo's story, and the book would have been fine without him, but I did appreciate that both narratives honed in on the Italian family dynamic, something I really enjoyed reading about that since I am Italian!Although this wasn't what I was expecting, it was a good read. The author's easy writing style gave this an air of fun even though there were series topics discussed. I would read more by this author. Please read more of my reviews on my blog: http://fastpageturner.wordpress.comor follow me on twitter at @dana_heyde

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Romantic, summer holiday escapism... By Kiwiflora What more can one ask for over the summer/Christmas holiday period than lying down with a bit of chick-lit. How blissful and escapist! I had forgotten how intensely enjoyable a bit of relaxing, romantic and light reading can be. And you can read extraordinarily quickly which enables you to move onto the next one...And, to take the bliss one step further, how about a setting of southern Italy, to an olive estate, owned and operated by the one family for some generations - oh the history, the family intrigues, the wine, the food, the olives!!!! The bliss goes on and on.Rosie is a school girl in London when the story begins. She has recently lost her parents in a horrific road accident and is living unhappily and aimlessly with her aunt and uncle. She still goes to school and quite by accident strikes up a friendship with an Italian girl from school, Addolorata who takes her under her wing slowly introduces her to life. The first step in this process is a holiday at a villa in Spain with two other girls from school. Surprisingly this goes extremely well, and Rosie gradually begins to find her feet, ably assisted by Addolorato and her Italian family who own and run, none other than an Italian restaurant! Quelle surprise! At the same time as Rosie is coping with the curve balls of life, in Italy Enzo is being groomed to take over the management of the olive estate from his father at some time in the future. Despite the estate being run by the men in the family, it is Enzo's fiery and strong grandmother who really runs the show and is determined that the estate will retain its prestigious international reputation. There is pressure on Enzo to find a young local woman to marry, but he continually resists.Inevitably of course, as in all good chick lit, Rosie and Enzo are destined to meet, and this is on a second villa holiday that the girls decide to take two years after the first. And as in all good romances there are complications and difficulties until, naturally the inevitable happens and the two are reunited.Oh yes it is all so predictable, and delicious and gorgeous, but who cares! The writing is delightful - the gloom and oppression of London vs the sunshine and brilliance of the Italian country side. And the food - Mamma Mia! I don't know if the writer has a background in food, but she writes about Italian food with love, joy and passion. Although from Liverpool and now living in New Zealand, her father is Italian and surely this must have something to do with it!So to take you away from your ordinary life, a little bit of Italy and romance and food combined could be the perfect recipe.

Lily was raised in the forties and fifties when you just didn't tell-yet there are still naive young women who keep secret the shame they believe they've brought on themselves rather than let someone know they are being abused, and they often allow that abuse to lead them into other situations they can't escape. In this heart-wrenching novel, Lily's life is spilled onto the pages in such a way the reader experiences the world through her eyes. Instead of merely watching her sins, they walk through life with her on feet of clay so that when the story comes full circle, the reader is brought to tears-not by a happily-ever-after ending but by a promise that tomorrow is another day and that the past does not have to define the future.

She is in service to the lending industry. In the nineties, she studied creative writing with Mary Fowler while that learned lady was holding teaching classes privately at her own home in the shadows of Emory University. The requirement to attend was to submit something that showed the writer would be capable of learning. She began her writing career around six years of age by plagiarizing first grader reader. Moved on, and with her larcenous ways, also plagiarized The Ugly Duckling by changing names to make herself the most beautiful girl on earth. Lily, the character Cooper Lee Collins so well brings to life for us, is young and tender when we first meet. Soon, though, we are thrust into her life of abuse, neglect and pain. Collins keeps us on edge as we root for Lily to finally overcome her demons and the scars of her past. Each chapter brings us on a ride through Lily's life and her pain is described in riveting ways. One minute the reader is near tears for Lily and the next feeling anger at Lily's inability to distance herself from those who cause her pain. I found myself staying up too late at night reading! I wanted Lily to survive and other characters to get their comeuppance. Collins surprises the reader, though, and its impossible to guess what might happen next to our Lily. While the topics of sexual and physical abuse are difficult to read, Collins handles them in a realistic way. Her writing is beautifully descriptive and each character will remind readers of someone they once knew, especially the reader with a Southern background.Kudos to Cooper Lee Collins. I hope she continues writing!

I was really bummed when it ended, but it stuck with me for a while - like the good ones tend to do. I really enjoyed the complexity of the author's style - it made for a fun read. The story follows a main character childhood-adulthood - the author portrayed perspectives of a child...teen...adult very well This was a multi-faceted novel that I couldn't put down from beginning-end - definitely recommend!!

I understand that he used this mechanism to introduce new principal characters but bringing in new villains that took pleasure in masochistic sexually motivated murders was too tangential to the main storyline. These new characters could have been introduced by writing in more detail on the way the government and military conspiracies evolved and that these new characters were tracking down these conspiracies separate from the electronic detection that the RVers are using.

By Patroo Another installment of this fascinating series is available, and while it still needs some editing, it is a much cleaner version than previous installments. It's a different take on the post-apocalyptic type of story, with RV-based Americans fighting back against foreign invaders as well as traitors from within. Technology lets them fight back and stay a step ahead of the bad guys. The bad guy catalog now includes a pair of serial killers as well as the military enemies. You do have to stretch reality a bit. The US is fighting an internal war, yet it's still possible to get fuel and supplies, with little difficulty in most cases. The RV travelers have tremendous tech knowledge and are very creative at problem solving, plus being great marksmen and bowmen. Just go with the flow and enjoy the developing story without getting too concerned with how possible some of this is...or isn't. The series is still a great, fast read.

I do see a lot of editorial fixes needed but they take nothing away from the stories. Each time I finish a book, I am ready for the next. I watch my listings and wait...somewhat impatiently. You, if you've been to any of the areas written about, will also enjoy the series. Now, concerning the "capabilities" in the series. It is readily apparent the author has knowledge of military and computer facts. Using them in a way to enhance the story line. Liberties were taken concerning those facts thereby giving a much better capability to each than is possible. This in no way harm's the story line. Enjoy the series.
