Jenny is in trouble. Chased into bleak Scottish hills for possessing information of which she is uncertain and having witnessed a brutal assault on her employer, she is in fear for her life. Now alone and desperate, she finds an inner strength and wisdom that lurks within her to rise to the challenge and do more than just cope. In fact, one almost feels sorry for those responsible – almost! Having left school possessing utter uncertainty as to what she wants to do with her life, Jenny meets Tom Stewart’s ex-colleague Gerry Swinburn. Now a private investigator, he takes a shine to the young girl and offers her a job. From dealing with a petty case of theft from employers, she and Gerry are catapulted over their heads into what started out as a minor industrial take-over investigation, to reveal illegal arms dealing and links to terrorism. In Book One, Every Little Girl’s Dream, we met veteran Police Inspector Tom Stewart briefly. We were also introduced to the pretty sixteen-year old Jenny Adams. They both ended up in the same hospital, for very different reasons. One survived. We followed Jenny as she struggled with the burden of amnesia, and later, and very gradually, with the memories that were most definitely not her own. Was Jenny really Tom, having somehow transferred his being into her body; or was she an amalgamation of the two? Will more be revealed as she rises to the new challenges?

Great job Ms. Allan By Amazon Customer I've now read the Jenny Adams story (both), and "In the shadows", and I am so impressed with the feeling of authentic credibility one gets in the reading experience. Obviously, Ms. Allen has some experience in the "spook", and international intrigue business, not to mention the world of trans. Thanks for the interesting reads Ms. Allen. Id sure love to know more about your background, but if you'd have to kill me after telling me, no worries, I'll just go ahead and remain curious!

Tanya Allan brings back the main character (Jenny Adams) from an older book (2011) by answering the question "what do I do now that I have finished school"? The resulting 200 plus pages are riveting. The story and character descriptions are finely developed, drawing the reader into the story page by page. Tanya even brings in the two main characters from a recent book ("In the Shadows") as the story ends, leaving the reader with hope that there is more to come.

Couldn't Put It Down By Julie Coulter Bellon This was a book I could not put down!Squire Ackerman has returned home after his tour of duty injured physically and emotionally. He's trying to save his family ranch without telling his father exactly how badly their last financial adviser has hurt them. But his father hires Kelly as their new accountant---the one woman Squire hasn't been able to forget.Kelly is trying to move on from a divorce, living with her parents until she can save enough money of her own to support her and her four-year-old son. When she gets the job at Three Rivers Ranch she's ecstatic because that will help her do that, until she comes face-to-face with Squire again. He was her best friend's little brother, but he has turned into so much more. She tries to quash her attraction to him since he's her boss and the last time she got involved with her boss it ended in divorce. But circumstances throw them together again and again and their feelings are too hard to ignore. But should she follow her heart and risk being hurt again?I loved these characters and the inner turmoil they were both experiencing drew me back again and again to see how they would deal with it all. I loved how Squire had always been drawn to Kelly, but a misunderstanding at the prom had forced him to try and forget about her. Yet, when it came right down to it, she was the woman he needed all along. Kelly was so relatable as a single mom trying to do right by her kid and piece her life back together. She didn't inspire pity in me at all, though, because she was doing what so many women have to do---pull herself up by her bootstraps and do her best for her child. I loved the relationship tension building slowly and surely, it wasn't an insta-love, but two mature adults trying to figure things out. The description and setting were spot on and I know I'll be looking for this author's next clean inspirational romance!

Squire is recently returned from the military, where he was honorably discharged after an injury. Hats off to those who serve in the military because I don't think I could do it and I truly appreciate all that they do for our country. I love that Squire is a deep character. He's working through issues resulting from his service, as well as trying to balance his wants and his duties for the future. He's a great all-around guy, if a little grumpy at times. When Squire discovers a large sum of money missing from the ranch, he hires an accountant and the only applicant is a girl who jilted him back in high school--Kelly. She's back, recovering from a divorce, and trying to get on her feet again. I really like Kelly and she's the kind of person I would love to have for a friend. She tries hard to make good impressions and to come off strong, but she's only human. Misunderstandings and mistakes happen and she's not afraid to own up to them...eventually. She has a darling son and I love his place in the story.I love the interactions these characters have with each other, with their families, and with other residents of the town. Speaking of the town, the setting is fabulous and makes me wish I lived in a place such as this. I love the added dash of mystery that brings this clean romance to a new level. This description says this is Book One and I'm definitely looking forward to more books in this series! As it also says in the description, if you're a fan of any of those authors listed, you'll be sure to love Liz Isaacson's work!*I received a copy in exchange for an honest review*

Squire and Kelly didn't actually date in high school--he's the younger brother of her best friend. She did, however, reject his invitation to go to the prom together. Only, there's a little more to that story.Kelly just got hired as the accountant for Three Rivers Ranch, the one that Squire's family owns. Squire lets her know there's a large amount of money missing but he's kept this fact from his parents. They work long hours together to try to locate the money since his family desperately needs it. They also try to deny their growing attraction to each other and need to clear the air if they want their relationship to work.Squire and Kelly were both easy to love! Kelly is reeling from a divorce she didn't see coming and has trust issues to deal with. She also has a four-year-old son to take care of and protect. Squire has issues, too. His life hasn't gone the way he had planned and he has some decisions to make about what he wants to do. He also needs to decide if Kelly will be part of his future plans. I loved how their relationship grew! They were cautious yet willing to try. This is Christian romance so it's clean (yay!) and does have some religious references but isn't preachy and works well with the story line. It's a fun, quick read and is exactly what I needed last week. I'm looking forward to reading more from this author in the future!I received a copy of this book to review. My opinion is 100% my own.

She closed her mind to the image of home where life had been simple and love had existed, knowing she had lost the key to it. She could never go back." "He was driving too fast, to put miles between him and all he loved, to get so far that he could not change his mind and they could not follow. The torrents of rainwater would wash out his tracks and, if he was lucky, eliminate all traces of his past." A brother and sister – living in different countries – find their lives spiralling out of control. They are looking for love but finding disaster. Their journeys are different but will they find the one who is waiting for them?

Thoughtful and thought-provoking By Helen Baggott Pride as much as rivalry seems to be the main motivation in two siblings separating from their family. Kate is determined to go along an independent path, whilst David finds it necessary to break from commitment and responsibility. Neither loses the love of their family and it’s ultimately that love that binds them together and gives them the strength to survive. The plot itself is interwoven with unspoken threat. Kate’s acquaintances bring with them a cloud of foreboding and threat. David’s dreams of career success seem thwarted. And what of their father? Theo is a man with a past, a man who loves his family beyond all else and will do everything to ensure they know they have his unconditional love. The reader understands what creates those threats and it’s almost like watching a cat playing with a mouse as we witness the taunting of a family.I found the characters compelling and was especially drawn to Theo and his resilience. This is a thoughtful and thought-provoking book.I received an uncorrected proof copy from the author.

6 of 6 people found the following review helpful. Very enjoyable/addictive read, full of action and suspense with touches of humor. By TenaciousReader Corsair is a thrilling and fun adventure full of space pirates and hackers, the kind of book that grabs you and holds you down (willingly) until it is all told. This book is pretty short, but it’s an addictive “page turner” that finished before I knew it. I say “page turner” in quotes because in actuality, I listened to this one as an audiobook so there were no actual pages involved. But I am really happy I did. There are some books that are just very well suited for audiobooks, and this was certainly one of them. The story and names are all very easy to follow while listening and the narration was very good, relaying the story clearly without ever becoming the focus of the listener (meaning, I heard the story well told). The style of Corsair reminds me a bit of Scalzi or Richard Morgan’s Altered Carbon, but with this book, most (if not just about all) of the story is set here on earth rather than in space.David Schwartz and Elizabeth Santiago meet while taking classes at MIT in the not so distant future. They are both incredibly bright, but incredibly different. David is a bit “creative” or “generous” with his moral compass, and Elizabeth is pretty much a straight shooter. So not surprisingly, their courses in life diverge soon after meeting. Fast forward 10 years, we find Elizabeth entered the military and is now working to fight space piracy and David has continued his less than legal approach to life. And it appears he has done quite well for himself. Their paths meet again as they both get pulled in to a nefarious plot for the ultimate space piracy. I knew it would happen, based on the initial meeting (and the blurb), but I really enjoyed seeing how they were brought together again in different ways (form different sides) by this plot.I like David, he’s just a fun, care-free type of guy. The kind of character that just amuses me and is hard for me to not like. He’s certainly not perfect, as any law enforcement official could tell you, and he could stand to give other people a bit more consideration instead of always thinking of himself. But I can’t help it, I still like him, as egotistical as he may be. Elizabeth is set on doing the “right” thing, even when that may not match procedure (she wound up working for the military with a focus on fighting space piracy). There’s an interesting look into the politics involved, and how sometimes the procedurally correct thing may not be the “right” thing overall. I know that’s not a new idea, but I still enjoy it and the conflict it can create. As different as these two characters are, I found myself rooting for both of them, which can be fun when they may or may not want the same thing.Overall, this was a very enjoyable read, full of action and suspense with touches of humor.

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. solid if a bit slight/thin By B. Capossere I was a fan of James Cambias’ debut novel, A Darkling Sea, a complex tale of First Contact that left lots of room at the end for a continuation of that story. Instead though, Cambias took a pretty strong detour with his second novel, Corsair, which as its name suggests has to do with space piracy, though perhaps not in the usual fashion. The phrase “space pirates” usually conjures up in one’s mind (well, this mind at least) a space opera-like story, with FTL ships barreling along in interstellar space, energy weapons and force fields, spaced suited and armored boarding parties a la all those books from my youth: Asimov’s Lucky Starr and the Pirates of the Asteroids, E.E. Doc Smith’s LENSMAN series, several Heinlein juveniles.Cambias eschews the old style version, though, instead presenting this novel’s particular “space pirate” (David Schwartz, aka Captain Black the Space Pirate) as a computer geek happily ensconced in his hotel room slapping a slew of neuro-patch stimulants on his skin while he hacks into a rocket’s guidance system and sends it to a pre-determined drop site for his employers. The rockets in this near-future scenario are cargo ships carrying a billion dollars worth of Helium-3 from the moon to Earth, to be used as fusion plant fuel. The story opens with Schwartz pulling off a successful heist despite the efforts of Air Force Captain Elizabeth Santiago (an old girlfriend it turns out). That incident gives Schwartz the money to retire and live the good life, while it sends Santiago off from her current post to another one as a liaison for a private satellite company. As often happens though, Schwartz gets convinced to pull “one last score—the big one” and the two are soon on opposite sides again, though it also turns out Schwartz’s employers haven’t been fully honest with him. Meanwhile, a third character, Anne Rogers, sets out to sail around the world and eventually becomes embroiled in the machinations, along with an FBI agent who has been trying to track down “Captain Black.”As mentioned above, Corsair is a pretty big departure from A Darkling Sea: near-future rather than far-future, near-space (if that, 90-plus percent takes place on Earth) rather than interstellar space, an all-human cast (even if one has some questions about the bad guy’s humanity), and a far lighter tone.I would call it a slighter book in most ways, with less complexity or depth of character, plot, and theme, and to be honest, I didn’t enjoy it as much as A Darkling Sea. That said, Corsair is a solid read that has its entertaining moments as it sends its two main characters into some tense moments (as well as some comical ones); I just happen to prefer wrestling with things a bit more.Plotting sometimes relies a bit too much on coincidence, and certainly readers will see much of what is coming before the characters, though it does move along quickly and smoothly. Anne’s segments feel more contrived than the other threads, and her early segments especially were a bit too detached, though she does have some personality/thematic resonances with the other two. Meanwhile, those who like their science in their science fiction will applaud Cambias’ attention to detail here with regard to thrust calculations, orbital mechanics, payload weight and the like (it all seems well researched though I’m hardly the guy to know).I’m not sure I’d label the characters fully or sharply drawn, but I did like that both are flawed, screw up in big and usually realistic ways (at times things felt a bit implausible), and that they don’t magically change their stripes to suddenly become less so or more “likable.”The world-building is somewhat thin, and I never quite got a good grip on the various entities involved on either side. It While these are probably more the result of the author’s intent and desire to have a tightly focused plot, it still would have been nice to have a greater sense of how things have changed in the world—socially, economically, politically.Though the book as noted is a bit slight, Cambias doesn’t shy away from at least referencing some larger, darker issues, such as our modern surveillance state, the debate over a law enforcement versus a militaristic response to terror, and sexual exploitation. At the other end of the spectrum, he does show at times a nice comical touch, especially in one hostage negotiation scene that had me chuckling out loud.I wouldn’t be honest if I didn’t admit Corsair was a bit of a disappointment, but I can’t fault an author for going a different route than I’d prefer, or for broadening his repertoire. If Corsair is a slighter sort of novel, a bit thin in character and plotting, it’s hardly a bad one, and it’s more than possible that those coming to Cambias fresh, or who like this sort of novel more than I do, will find it more than satisfactory.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. this story is about the many quirky characters By AudioBook Reviewer It is approximately fifteen years in the future and the moon is being mined for its helium to fuel the world’s fusion reactors. The payloads coming back to earth are worth billions; attracting the interest of pirates who try to intercept them. David Schwartz , AKA Captain Black, the space pirate, is a computer genius and hacker, using his skills and lack of morals to hijack these flying treasure chests. He is brilliant, elusive, charming in an annoying way, equally wanted by the police for his crimes and by the crime syndicates for his skills. That’s the basic plot/theme, straight forward and linear. Though predictable, it doesn’t really matter, this story is about the many quirky characters, and most importantly, Captain Black, the space pirate. The author uses his full moniker over and over, “Captain Black, the space pirate; Captain Black, the space pirate,” which at first annoys the listener, then numbs him, then reveals the actual intent – humor. And if you go into this book with a sense of humor, you will be OK, if not, you will want to rip your eardrums out. There is no middle ground. The characters are more like caricatures: Captain Black is a genius nerd, brilliant, sarcastic and supremely annoying; yet he somehow always gets the babe, whether she is the dumb blonde or the smart scientist. Elizabeth, the military scientist, is also brilliant with everything going for her, including a skyrocketing career; yet is strangely attracted to the destructive David Schwartz (Captain Black), then hates him. The corporate eunuchs, on the other hand, shrug as their billion dollar payloads disappear, far more worried about a lawsuit than the money they should be making. Equally impotent are the military and police forces of the world, unwilling or unable to do much more than watch as the world’s power supply gets hijacked over and over. In one scene, a single police officer on a bicycle (yes, plastic helmet and bike shorts) attempts to intercept a vicious assassin in a cafe shootout. If taken as a kind of super nerd, spy satire, it’s pretty funny and will hold your interest throughout. The science is well researched and rings true. Many of the scenes are inventive and painted realistically enough for your imagination to take over. The several chase and action scenes should hold your attention too. There is some violence, but it is superficial, without gruesome details.Victor Bevine reads the story well, moving quickly during the action and slowing down during the descriptive scenes. His voice is clear and his characters are generally easy to discern. Overall, Bevine is competent and skillful without ever getting in the way of the story. If you know what you are going into (humorous high tech satire) you should enjoy the story. It is also recommended for young adults and older teens who like computer hacking adventures. Don’t get caught up in the obvious contradictions and unlikely character interactions and you should have a fun and light read/listen.Audiobook provided for for review by the publisher. Please find this complete review and many others at audiobookreviewer dot com[If this review helped, please press YES. By jlswainsboro/Judy Lewis Title: Crazy WeeksSeries: Alpha Billionaire Romance SeriesDesignation: Book Four of Multi-Installment Serial, NOT a StandaloneAuthor: Sarah J BrooksReading Platform: Kindle UnlimitedMy Rating: FIVE DELIGHTFULLY ENTERTAINING STARS *****Love it! Crazy Weeks is the fourth installment of Sarah J Brooks' seductive new serial and I must say, I'm totally captivated. Okay, I realize that multi-installment serials are not for everyone but what can I say, I love them. And Sarah Brooks just got my attention! This is my first time reading anything written by Brooks but I can say with absolute certainty, it won't be my last. I am so hooked on this series! I love the concept of this story: a strong female lead with BRAINS. She's not only beautiful but intelligent as well and the icing on the cake: she has a mind of her own. Of course, we all love a handsome alpha male lead and love them all the more when they're charming and intelligent. And let's not forget - filthy rich! Who can resist that combination??? The story is exciting, sensual, arousing, well crafted, interesting and held my attention. Once I started reading, it was easy to immerse myself in the story and I wanted more. The narrative is exceptionally well written in the first person with alternating his and her points of view, which I love. I believe this adds to the depth and complexity of the story and definitely gives us a better understanding of the characters, their feelings and motivations. The dialogue is smart, snappy, easy to follow and flows effortlessly. And now for the best part, the characters. They are fascinating, captivating, intriguing, engaging and relatable. The chemistry between the two lead characters is convincing and almost palpable. Quite simply, it is off the charts sexy. Brooks skillfully crafts these elements into a fabulously entertaining contemporary romance with a twist. What kind of twist, you ask? Well, it's a little too early to tell but I strongly suspect that we will have a little mystery and suspense in the near future. (And we do!) And please forgive me for being crass, but we didn't have to wait until halfway through the book for the mind-blowing sex! Oh no, Brooks rewarded us in the very first installment and gave us a little taste of how well suited these characters are for each other. I can hardly wait to read the next installment!Beautiful graduate student Becka Jasper is definitely on her way to a very promising and successful career. She's had to work hard for everything she has and intends to work even harder to get what she wants. When Oliver Weeks, CEO of Neuotova is invited to speak as a guest lecturer by Dr Evans, Becka's professor/advisor/mentor, she is able to snag an interview for an internship with Oliver Weeks, CEO of Neuotova, a major food research corporation. But Becka is immediately thrown off her game when she first sets eyes on Oliver Weeks and is more than just a little attracted to him. She immediately feels the chemistry between them and is conflicted over her decision to seek a job with the handsome, charismatic CEO. And it seems Oliver Weeks may be attracted to her as well. Oh my!Billionaire Oliver Weeks has worked long and hard to achieve his success. The only area in which he hasn't been successful is his personal life. He works hard but plays little and very seldom has time for a relationship with the fairer sex. Most of his dates are arranged by his personal assistant and never the same woman. He has no interest in love or developing feelings for anyone - until now. One look at Becka Jasper is all it takes for alpha male Oliver to know that he wants her and not just as an intern in his lab. She's not only beautiful but she's also brilliant. He wants her in his life as well as his bed and he's not accustomed to being told no. Oliver Weeks always gets what he wants and he wants Becka. Oh my! Will Oliver be able to convince Becka to accept his offer - both of them??? Hmm...I wonder???Book Two:Becka has accepted Oliver's requests for several dates and their chemistry is off the charts but she's still conflicted over accepting an internship with his company while having a personal relationship with the handsome CEO. She has little time to consider her dilemma when she's broadsided with some devastating news. Becka and Dr Evans have spent countless time and much effort on a special research project for Protame, a healthy replacement for the artificial sweetener Aspartame. Becka has worked tirelessly on this project and has also chosen it as the subject as her dissertation. The university has suffered budget cutbacks and as a result, they have lost funding for their project. Oh no! What will she do? Maybe she should tell Oliver. Will Oliver be able to help??? Oliver is more determined than ever to have the beautiful Becka in his bed and in his lab. And he's not above a little scheming and manipulation to get what he wants. But let's not forget, Becka has a mind of her own and may have a few surprises in store for the wealthy determined billionaire! It's a battle of wills and both are determined to get what they want but will it be each other??? Or are there other secrets and motivations at play? Hmm... I wonder???Book Three:Oliver weeks did indeed help the lovely Becka and donated the money anonymously to the University to fund her Protame project and of course he has his own selfish reasons. He wants Becka and if that means making her feel somewhat indebted to him, then so be it. He's certainly not above using every dirty trick in the book to get what he wants but he certainly never expected her proclamation of never mixing business with pleasure. She's refused to sleep with him if she accepts the position at Neuotova! Huh? Oh yes, she definitely laid the law down to him. But when had he ever allowed a little thing like an emphatic no to ever stop him from getting what he wants? Never! He'll do whatever it takes; he's determined to have the beautiful, intelligent Becka?Becka knows it was Oliver that donated the money but does finally agrees to accept the internship with Neuotova, but she has a caveat of her own. If she accepts the internship as a paid position, she will be unable continue her personal relationship with Oliver. What? Nope, her conscience won't allow it. She will not allow a personal relationship to compromise her work ethics. Or will she? While doing some research on Oliver and his company, Becka uncovers some very disturbing allegations against Oliver and his company Neuotova, allegations charging animal cruelty by the use use of animals in their research, experimentation and testing. Huh? Becka is a researcher after all so who better to investigate? Becka is invited by her advisor Dr Evans to teach a Food Science Ethics class and at her very first class she meets student Ethan Hernandez who makes some serious charges regarding the use of animal testing against Neuotova. But are they true or simply conjecture and who is Ethan Hernandez? There's only one way to discover the truth and if it means more research into company files, then that's a chance she's willing to take. She just hadn't expected a perfect opportunity to fall into her lap when Oliver offers her a job as his assistant and a two week working vacation to Italy. Huh? Oh my! Can she work so closely with him and still be objective? I think not!Book Four:Apparently, Becka can't remain objective, not when Oliver insists on whisking her away to Italy for a working vacation with lots of shopping, romantic dinners and lots and lots of dreamy sex. Oh my! But nothing can last forever and so they must return home to their lives which for Becka includes discovering the truth about Oliver. Becka has received an email from Ethan promising absolute proof of his accusations against Oliver. Becka reveals this information to Oliver but she now must decide whether to meet with Ethan. But Ethan has decided to turn up the heat, not only in his effort to turn Becka against Oliver but also to pursue her for himself as well. What? Becka is now caught in the middle of the two powerful men and has no idea which one to believe. And the latest revelation from Oliver about Ethan has her even more confused! Talk about dropping a bomb! Oh my glory! I never saw that one coming! So, what's a girl to do when two handsome, wealthy men are both supposedly vying for her affection? Sleep with one and kiss the other??? Oh my! That Ethan is such a devilishly naughty boy! After all, what's a little blackmail and extortion among ......I'll never tell! No spoilers from me but I will say this....Buckle up and hang on! It's one heck of a great ride! Beautiful intelligent grad student with a mind of her own-check! Handsome alpha male billionaire who refuses to take no for an answer-check! Wealthy, charismatic accuser intent on destroying his ??????-check! No Spoilers! Blackmail, extortion and some very serious allegations accusing animal abuse, cruelty and experimentation-check! A little mystery, suspense and a few secrets-check! But one of the things that really prompted me to write is that I like that the author tells you up front in the description that this is a stand alone story, but if you are interested, what order it's best to read the series. Why do I find that so important? Because I am totally fed up with these books that are cliff hangers, with a totally unresolved story, and the series of books are actually what I'd consider ONE book split into 2 or 3 segments. It really bugs me to get to the so-called end of a book and discover I *HAVE* to buy another book if I want to know what happens.Thankfully, that is NOT the case here. But because the book is so good, and the characters and storyline so engaging, it makes you WANT to buy more books because they're such a good read, not because you were coerced into it to have to see how the story ends.So to sum it up, a fun read with characters you want to hear more about, outstanding author and I really REALLY like her ethics. A series with the same characters is a great idea, and how she handles it leaves a much better vibe with me. Thank you for your style!

It was sweet, maddening, hopeful, funny, just so many turns in it. It ended sort of quickly but didn't leave much unknown. I will look for more in this series. I'd recommend it to all that enjoy light romance, clean, clever and well written.

EARTH'S ONLY HOPE WAS THE COBRASThe colony worlds Adirondack and Silvern fell to the Troft forces almost without a struggle. Outnumbered and on the defensive, Earth made a desperate decision. It would attack the aliens not from space, but on the ground—with forces the Trofts did not even suspect. Thus were created the Cobras, a guerilla force whose weapons were surgically implanted, invisible to the unsuspecting eye, yet undeniably deadly. But power brings temptation, and not all the Cobras could be trusted to fight for Earth alone. Jonny Moreau would learn the uses—and abuses—of his special abilities and what it truly meant to be a Cobra. At the publisher's request, this title is sold without DRM (Digital Rights Management).

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. A Serviceable, If Rough, Science-Fiction Story from Zahn By Viking ZX Honestly, Cobra is not Zahn's best work. In fact, it's one of his earlier works, and it shows. Compared to his later novels, a lot of the elements are there, the pieces, but they just don't quite slide together as well as they would ten years later. For that, Cobra feels a bit dated compared to his other works, almost enough to feel slightly out of place. That said, it never crosses any barriers into poor or bad, and stays fairly average throughout, so for a free read and as a teaser of Zahn's work to come, it isn't bad. Basically, if you're thinking of starting to read Zahn, consider that Cobra is one of his earlier books. What he writes gets better from here on out, and the trappings that you see here that aren't quite so utilized—for instance, in Cobra he bounces between being able to subtlety misdirect and not being able to—grow in capability in his later books.Cobra also isn't what most would expect. Cobra is not a war story. Only two-fifths of the book covers the main characters experiences as a covert agent in the war, and half of that is training. The rest of the book is about coming home from the war, dealing with the effects of trying to be an ordinary person again, and where it goes from there. While it's not written at a level that will make your jaw drop, it's certainly functional enough to present a basic story.Again, it's early Zahn, so it's basically the beginning. His work gets better from here, and there are better places to start if you're willing to buy his other books. Cobra feels ... simple, I think, is a good word for it. It's a nonstandard supersoldier story, that much is certain, but it's rough around the edges, still experimental in how it handles itself, like a prototype of what's to come.Still, its an entertaining enough read if you have some spare time, and at the price, hard to beat. Also, whether it's as a result of the conversion to e-book or if the original printing had it, there are a few small typos, like most books, including one misusedword about halfway through the volume (a case that honestly looks like a case of 90s-era spellcheck picking the wrong replacement word). So there is that.

Several unexpected twists kept me reading and looking forward to reading more.I like books that actually have a conclusion, not waiting for the next book in the series to find out what happens. This book had an end, but could also continue in a series.I would definitely read more from this author!

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Another Military Sci Fi in the 'okay' department By GPS I thought this story was decent. I always liked Timothy Zahn for his Admiral Thrawn Trilogy in 'Star Wars' and had read one or two other things by him in the past, so I thought I'd give this early work of his a try. I did like it.'Cobra' follows the career of a Sci Fi spec ops soldier through all of his trials and tribulations, from his commissioning clear through his ascension to governor-hood of a human satellite colony. Each section is written as a short-story vignette with relatively little narrative cross-talk between the different sections, except that the same soldier has proceeded to a new point in his life. The characters are appropriately written and the plots in each section are logical. I thought well of the story overall and have not decided yet whether I read the follow-on stories.Overall, this work is a poor-man's version of Heinlein's "Starship Troopers" or Haldeman's "The Forever War." I would say heavily inspired, if not cribbed from these other works, with some version of the technology from "The Stars My Destination" thrown in for good measure. As such, there really isn't much to this story that I would call truly original. Executed well, but not original. One of the few huge conceptual gripes I had was that the Cobras, which are Zahn's version of a cybernetically enhanced guerrilla infantry, are not quite appropriately trained or outfitted. First, the Cobra program shows relatively little in the way of conditioning and training for selecting good soldiers... the first washout occurs after the government has already spent the money to build the soldier, which is kind of stupid. Any real life government knows that you wash out inept SEAL candidates before you spend the money making them technically proficient. Second, the Cobras are commissioned and not improved over time. In real life, SEALs receive state-of-the-art, first-pick technological enhancements constantly. This is because the enemy will eventually learn the SEAL's bag of tricks and the SEALs are always looking to get ahead in the game. The book makes a big deal about a Cobra soldier getting taken by the enemy for capability analysis early on, but doesn't seem to follow through with the obvious Human response to that eventuality by constantly updating the Cobras. This kind of soldier would not ultimately leave the war with the same technology he started out carrying. I get that the Cobras live the whole war behind enemy lines, but later Cobras would have a different weapon load-out and capability specs than the earlier soldiers. Moreover, the humans would rotate duty, pulling earlier soldiers back to update them before redeploying them. Far worse, Cobras commissioned half a lifetime later, toward the end of the book, would presumably have completely different capabilities from their forerunners. Betting on a WWI biplane in WWII is suicide and the militaries of the human race know this.My other major gripe was with the Troft aliens. Any starfaring alien race humans meet out in the universe will be separated from us in development by thousands to hundreds of thousands (or even millions) of years. Compare us to ourselves just 2000 years ago. An interstellar war against such an enemy will not look anything like World War II. Military science fiction books quite frequently assume that an alien that we might be at war with is necessarily the same level of technology as us, which is probably not a terrific assumption. A far older race will have seen and survived threats we have not encountered yet and will be able to respond to those things.I feel strongly that if either of these logical complaints had been answered, the story told would have been pretty different. These complaints aside, it's not a bad piece of writing, just not an amazing standout either.
