One year after the Indian Ocean tsunami, Angela finds herself flying into the devastated region of Banda Aceh as a researcher for the UN. Enthusiastic and committed, the young American woman arrives at a place swarming with young aid workers and she soon enters a world that is nothing like what she has known. Post-tsunami Banda Aceh is a unique bubble where everyday experiences like house hunting or going to a coffee shop are wracked with complications and a work trip can end up at a football game played by elephants. While Angela rapidly becomes disillusioned with the NGO life, she has to cope with falling in love in a region where men and women are traditionally segregated. Soon Angela finds herself wondering if she will have to choose between love and work.

This book is beautiful; it is a love story interlaced with drama By Fazeena This book is beautiful; it is a love story interlaced with drama, a background of post war and natural disasters within a unique culture that few of us have experienced. Definitely a novel many will enjoy!

By David Lawrence This is a heartwarming story for any reader, but those working in development will recognize the cultural, social and work-related complexities of life in far-flung, difficult environments. Those of us who worked in Banda Aceh after the 2004 tsunami will recognize a world that no longer exists. It was a short, frenetic time, when Aceh was full of developmental organizations stumbling over each other while trying to help the province get back up on its feet.Like the character James, I loved living there, and I am grateful to the author for capturing that time so perfectly in this wonderful book.

About the Author Amazon best-selling author, mom of three, Realtor, beer blogger, brewery marketing expert, and soccer fan, Liz Crowe is a Kentucky native and graduate of the University of Louisville currently living in Ann Arbor. She has decades of experience in sales and fund raising, plus an eight-year stint as a three-continent, ex-pat trailing spouse. Her early forays into the publishing world led to a groundbreaking fiction hybrid, “Unconventional Romance. Worth the Risk,” which has gained thousands of fans and followers interested less in the “HEA” and more in the “WHA” (“What Happens After?”). With stories set in the not-so-common worlds of breweries, on the soccer pitch, in successful real estate offices and at times in exotic locales like Istanbul, Turkey, her books are unique and told with a fresh voice. The Liz Crowe backlist has something for any reader seeking complex storylines with humor and complete casts of characters that will delight, frustrate and linger in the imagination long after the book is finished. Don’t ever ask her for anything “like a Budweiser” or risk bodily injury.

This book is written in two parts, the first by Lindsay the mother and the second by Angelique the daughter. Just when you think Lindsay is a real bitch, the switch flips and you can totally identify with her struggles with family and life choices. Seeing the family and it’s drama through Angel’s eyes will make you evaluate your own sibling and parental relationships in life.I loved this book from start to finish. I became reacquainted with the Love brothers and the changes in their lives that have them turning into honorable men. Meeting Angel on a different level was enlightening, heartbreaking and endearing in equal measure. If you like a book with the “feels”, this is the book for you.

Talk about having a book hangover on its way! I've been a fan of this series but didn't expect anything as emotional as what was delivered in Family Love. The feels it brought out, the tears that were pulled from me and the heartache I felt. Liz Crowe delivered something much more intense than I could have imagined. To see the relationship between Lindsey and Anton spark and flourish as young adults from different cultures and lifestyles was a huge treat for me. Sure we meet them throughout the the stories for each of the Love brothers, but to see them fall in love and and battle the hurdles that plague most young couples, when it comes to married life, children and money struggles gave me such a new perspective and an understanding of who they are and why they were the way they were with their children.Aside from seeing the start of a legacy that is the Love Family, we see their only daughter, and youngest of the brood, Angelique as she struggles with finding herself. Her strained relationship with her mother is only just the tip of the iceberg for this girl. She bounces from bad decision to bad decision throughout her life as some sort of way to prove she can do it on her own. Her desire to stay as far away from her mother and the family drama keeps her distant from the family over a stretch of years but health scares, and family secrets keep pulling her back into the fold no matter how resistant she is to it all. Her family loyalty and obligations are even stronger than her stubbornness.I have to say, there were moments that I actually fought back the urge to just put my kindle down and BOO HOO. It was those small shared family moments that really pulled at my heart strings. Family Love isn't just a story about romance; it's a story about family, sibling bonds, and the love a parent has for a child.Bravo, Liz Crowe! I can't wait to see what's next for this amazing family.*a copy was provided in exchange for an honest review

As with the entire series, it's an emotional roller coaster ride. A good one. You get real life drama: love, hurt, misunderstandings, struggles, oh yeah and sex. A page turner I couldn't put down. This is Lindsay and Anton's story. Angelique, their daughter, is the second half. From her point of view with their mother-daughter conflict. It's a real-life romance. How love grows from the very beginning of a relationship to, after many years, the couple is still in love, battle scars, trophies and all. For a book to cause me to seek out the Kleenex box says a lot - I don't get emotional reading. But Liz Crowe does that to you. Brava! Wonderful job - again!

The Lord-Protector's Daughter (Corean Chronicles), by L. E. Modesitt Jr.

From Publishers Weekly Modesitt returns to the setting of two earlier trilogies with a stand-alone novel that keeps readers engaged right up to the perfunctory conclusion. As oldest daughter of the ruler of Lanachrona, Mykella has high rank but no real power. Though intelligent and diligent enough to uncover an embezzlement plot, she cannot inherit and expects to be married off for political alliance. Then she receives a supernatural warning of danger and is told she must discover her psionic Talent to save her loved ones. As she struggles to defeat both evil nonhuman powers and treachery within her own family, her fumbling but determined efforts are endearing. Unfortunately, the abrupt ending leaves unresolved the larger issues of the role of magic in public life and the position of women in society. (Nov.) From Booklist For the seventh Corean story, Modesitt produces a near-classic fairy tale. About 300 years after the events in Soarer’s Choice (2006), Lanachrona is ruled by the descendants of Mykel and Rachyla. Mykella, eldest daughter of the current lord protector, discovers that significant amounts of taxes are not reaching her father’s treasury. Her father downplays her warnings and refuses to consider the most likely suspect. Then Mykella meets a soarer, who tells her she must go to the ancient Table beneath the palace if she wants to save her land and world. She tries, learning as quickly as she can, but a series of fatal and near-fatal incidents among her family and retainers heightens the danger. In the end, perseverance and justice triumph—for the moment. Although familiarity with the other stories of Corus may help in appreciating this one, it can be enjoyed on its own, even with the element of idiocy in its plot, thanks to characters in high positions who appear to have no more intelligence than a cockroach. --Frieda Murray

Review "The characters are flawless, his worldbuilding continues to enchant and there is always plenty of conflict and mystery." ---RT Book Reviews

However, I have also enjoyed the Recluce and Corean Chronicles. I had hoped this would continue with what happened to Dainyl and Mykel from SOARER'S CHOICE. It did not. This story is set 500 years after the end of SOARER'S CHOICE. I still looked forward to reading it.Mykella is one of three daughters of the Lord Protector. All of the daughters have been raised to know they will be wedded to leaders selected by their father. Mykella is very smart, she helps with the tariff's and she feels that something is not right, so already she is searching the ledgers for discrepancies. She uncovers a plot by her Uncle to unseat her father. About this time she is contacted by the Soarers who are watching over the Ifrit table in Tempre. The rest of the book tells of her trials to learn to use her Talent. Then she must confront the conspiracy by herself, as her father does not believe her when she tries to warn him about his brother. She must also face the Ifrit in the table. The sense of her helplessness pervades most of the novel. I got very tired of her inability to accomplish anything, she never even plans anything until the last few pages. However, if you are expecting any action or adventure you can forget it. I finally reached the point of wishing the worst would go ahead and happen. This is a short novel, only 284 pages and this did not allow our author to add any action scenes except for the last few pages. I do not feel it is worth the money. I wanted abit of action and even abit of romance. I was very disappointed.

12 of 14 people found the following review helpful. Still Stuck in a Rut By James D. DeWitt The impressively prolific Modesitt has added a short novel to this Corean Chronicles. This one is set about 500 years after the events of Soarer's Choice: The Sixth Book of the Corean Chronicles, and focuses on the heirs of Mykel, the Cadmian solider who was a co-protagonist in the "Choice" trilogy.I believe this is the first time Modesitt has had a female protagonist since the Song Cycle. She is the oldest child and daughter of the Lord Protector of Lanchrona, the nation-state that is the focus of most of the Corean tales. In a deeply misogynist culture, where a woman's role is basically to be a spouse, Mykella struggles to find a place for herself. While I applaud Modesitt for finally using a female protagonist, otherwise he seems to be stuck in a creative rut. At important levels, this is the same story as his first Recluce novel, The Magic of Recluce (Recluce series, Book 1). A young character must understand himself or herself and a situation well enough to act intelligently. Usually this involves killing someone. Don't expect any plot surprises here.My other quarrel is that essentially each chapter starts with the family around the breakfast table. I personally intend to avoid egg toast and sausage for a while; I've shared enough in this novel. While a fantasy novel has to be grounded in reality, watching the protagonist wash her face, eat her breakfast and drink her tea every morning - and I mean every morning - doesn't do the trick. It's the mistake the late Robert Jordan made that made his last half dozen novels so tedious. What I'd like is for Modesitt to bring his world-building skills to his plots, narrative and characterization. Recluce and Corea are vividly imagined worlds, with plausible magic systems. Modesitt has demonstrated impressive powers of creativity. But he seems stuck in the bildungroman rut, telling essentially the same story again, sometimes with adult protagonists and sometimes with adolescents, but pretty much the same plot. In stand-alone novels like The Hammer of Darkness, he develops other kinds of plots and other kinds of character development well. I'd like to see it in the Corean Chronicles and Recluce stories as well.Workmanlike, but nothing more. Recommended only for those who want their Corean Chronicles to be complete.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Some fresh air By T. A. Widman Modesitt is an unbelievably prolific author, unfortunately this also means he tends to rely on what he knows he does well. This has plagued his Saga of Recluce. Modesitt plays to his strengths. He is skilled in describing the growth of a character from naivte to strength and power, politics and intrigue, military manuevering and the mechanics and philosphy of "magic." The Lord Protector's Daughter is no exception. However, besides theSpell Song Cycle, this is one of his few female protagonists. This lends Modesitt's writing a fresh turn. His books have always dealts with issues of sex and power, themes which ulitmately become the primary antagonist of this novel. The plot centers around a conspiracy, which Mykella gradually unveils as the story unfolds. She also discovers she posesses Talent, and spends much of the book learning how to master it and discover ways to use it to both prevent incursions by the Ifrits and bring a stop to the conspiracy. At times this book was frustrating. Though enjoyable, especially in its further clarifications on the nature of Talent, Mykella is unable to do anything until the final moments of the novel. Modesitt really relies heavily on the nature and influence of women in society of Corus and their helplessness. While a good read, it often felt as if the story was about nothing, lots of problems, but never any solutions...until the very end. Not the best, but not the worst either; and if you enjoyed the Corean Chronicles and Modesitt's style you should enjoy this as well.

Manny White Vidal is an expert on Guarida, an oil-producing Caribbean nation riddled with poverty, corruption, and demagoguery. Trouble strikes when Claudio Sánchez takes power. Spewing anti-American rhetoric, the charismatic leader seduces the masses with promises of revolutionary reform. The U.S. State Department seeks to protect Big Oil by tapping Manny to embed himself in the University of Guarida. Torn between his loyalty to the U.S. and his ideals sympathetic to social justice, he advocates for mutual understanding. Yet, he stumbles into a political minefield. And a torrid affair with a hustler endangers his relationship with his prospective fiancée in New York. Meanwhile, Manny's search for a disappeared cousin, who joined the Freedom Front after Security Police murdered his parents, turns into a terrifying odyssey. Convinced of American complicity in a botched attempt to assassinate President Sánchez, Manny openly questions U.S. policy. Nevertheless, Sánchez accuses Manny of espionage, subjects him to water-boarding, and holds him hostage. Can Manny extricate himself from the complicated web of deceit, betrayal, and treachery into which he has fallen? Sánchez offers a deal in which Manny denounces American intervention in exchange for his freedom. Will he take the deal or deliver a State Department ultimatum? Manny's escapades raise questions about crossing cultural as well as moral boundaries, temptation, and individual responsibility. Ultimately, both Manny and Sánchez must choose to take a stand either for their country or their personal survival. Their choices are surprising.

The well developed characters and the plots twist around around an idealistic protagonist in a fast paced, sexy, sweaty, orgy of power and money. This novel is a lesson in politics and corporate greed that is a really fun read. A real page turner. I highly recommend this book.

I appreciate the author's boldness in tackling these tough topics which are needed discussions in the community. Truly, it's a glimpse into how quickly life can take a turn. However, what was missing was development and proper editing. As the story went on it felt like 2 stories into one and began to feel rushed. Giselle's character quickly turned very brazen which was somewhat off putting. Also there were several simple grammatical errors and some story contradictions that began to take away from the story. Yet, it did hold my attention and I'm interested to see how this story ends and this author develops.

Good By Ms.Taurus This was a sad but good read about a young girl who is in love with her brothers friend but the guy is a heathen and destroys this child's childhood .This book I would definitely recommend because I know women who went through this and this happens in everyday life

It touched on some rather sensitive subjects such as rape, teenage pregnancy, friendships... It made me cry and feel sad at times. We can't always control our situation but we gotta make the best of the life we are given. I hope Giselle realizes that everything that has happened to her is just testing her faith and preparing her for the years ahead. I can't wait to read part 2 because I need to know how this darling's life turns out.

Julie Evans’ calm life is thrown a curve ball when her brother arrives the night before his seven-month deployment asking her to take care of his son. As a preschool teacher, she’s used to dealing with toddlers, not nine-year-olds. Noting her nephew’s interest in baseball, Julie signs him up for little league. She’s anything but thrilled to find out that his coach is a celebrity. Eric Gibson returned to St Marys to lick his wounds and start over. But even in his hometown, he’s known more for his unfortunate appearance on a reality dating show than for his seven years in the major leagues. All he has to show for that poor decision is an ex-wife and a broken heart. Julie’s obvious disapproval makes her the perfect choice for his team mom. If she doesn’t like him, she won’t cause any problems. But will that be enough to keep his growing interest in her in check? And as Julie’s preconceived notions about sports figures slowly unravel, will she be able to resist the man behind the public persona?

6 of 7 people found the following review helpful. Loved It!!! By RONALD HAWKINS I loved this book. Sweet story about 2 people finding love without looking for it. I loved that it was just a straight forward book without conflicts and huge misunderstandings . If you are looking for a sweet clean read that will make you feel good this one will do the trick.

4 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Sweet Romance but has No True "Christian" Content and is Miscategorized By Amazon Customer Sweet story exactly as advertised. The writing and editing in this book is far better than in most short novels in its genre. The author writes well but there is no major conflict between the hero and heroine whatsoever and some cliched situations, but it was well written otherwise. However, anyone looking for an inspirational or Christian romance will not find that in this book, so in that regard, this book is miscategorized and I was disappointed. There are multiple occasions in the book where there were clear opportunities to provide examples of grace, forgiveness, and redemption. The only mention of anything remotely to do with Christianity was when it was mentioned that two of the characters went to a church service. No discussion of God between the characters. No cursing is a plus. A lot of physical touching and kisses and some suggestive comments. This is a sweet and clean romance. If that's what you're seeking, you'll probably enjoy this book.
