By A Customer This is the most humane story I have read regarding the violence, fear, and unwavering love of placeand community that so largely defines Northern Island in the last third of this century. Ten years ago I chose this book off the shelf, without knowing anything about it or the author. I read the book on a Saturday and was so amazed by it I re-read it again the next day. A week later I read it again and have read it perhaps 10 times over the years. The story of a grandfather faced to make a terrible decision is a simple plot but a complex question. And the dual love of family and Place enrich this story of how compassion overrides criminality. I would also recommend anything else written by Benedict Kiely, for his ability to Put The Reader In Northern Ireland.

By A Customer Benedict Kiely's novel, Proxopera, is a story of a man faced with an impossible decision: drive a bomb into his beloved town for the IRA or his family will be killed. Other stories have been written along this line, yes, but not like this. His novel describes this horrible situation in a hauntingly poetic way. It also paints the ugly picture of the modern Provisionals. This book is essential to anyone who explores Republicanism or the situation in modern Ireland. It is also a example of exceptional writing.

In one of his beloved early bestsellers, Pulitzer Prize–winning author James A. Michener crafts a tale of the American men who fought the Korean War, detailing their exploits in the air as well as their lives on the ground. Young and innocent, they arrive in a place they have barely ever heard of, on a ship massive enough to carry planes and helicopters. Trained as professionals, they prepare for the rituals of war that countless men before them have endured, and face the same fears. They are American fighter pilots. Together they face an enemy they do not understand, knowing their only hope for survival is to win.   Praise for The Bridges at Toko-Ri   “A vivid and moving story, as well as an exciting one . . . The humanity of the people is deeply felt.”—Chicago Tribune   “The Banshees screaming over Korea, the perilous landings on an aircraft carrier deck ‘bouncing around like a derelict rowboat,’ a helicopter rescue from the freezing waters . . . all are stirringly rendered.”—The Denver Post   “Michener’s best . . . a story of action, ideas, and civilization’s responsibilities.”—Saturday Review

Mazza I have heard the Korean War described as America's "forgotten war," so I was eager to read James Michener's "The Bridges at Toko-Ri." A short novel about United States fighter pilots taking part in the Korean conflict, this book is an entertaining, and often very thoughtful, story of this era.The plot of the book is driven by a daring plan to destroy the strategic bridges of the title. The main characters in the story are George Tarrant, a no-nonsense admiral with a painful personal burden; Mike Forney, a tough and passionate Irish-American enlisted man; and Harry Brubaker, a husband and father who resents being recalled to military service as a pilot.Michener creates an effective blend of action and personal drama. His narrative is full of interesting, vividly rendered details about life on an aircraft carrier.Yes, some of the book's characters and situations seem a bit stereotypical; the female characters, in particular, struck me as one-dimensional. But overall this book is an impressive achievement. Michener creates a compelling portrait of men at war. This book deserves a continuing audience; I thank Michener for helping to keep the legacy of Korean War veterans alive with this novel.

18 of 19 people found the following review helpful. Read it in an afternoon By Scott Swindle This is almost a novella; it can easily be read in an afternoon. I read this after seeing the movie, and it's one of those rare occassions where I like the movie better than the book. The book is still compelling, though. A Navy attack pilot is reluctantly thrust into the Korean War, and seems on the verge of a nervous breakdown. This man wants nothing more than to come home to his wife and kids, all of whom he loves deeply. In case you've never seen it, I highly recommend the 1954 movie with William Holden, Frederic March, Grace Kelly, Mickey Rooney, Earl Holliman. Only minor parts of the story were changed for the movie, otherwise it's very faithful.

Clever and Informative By A Customer I read this book voluntarily for a book report as a freshman in high school, and found that I was also able to tie it into a history project. The story really makes it easier to understand the feelings and happenings of the misunderstood Korean War, also called the "forgotten war". I recommend it for anyone who wants to know more about this war or just enjoys action books in general.

Goddess Rising: A Prequel (Complicated Creatures), by Alexi Lawless

Review "Totally riveting!""Lawless delivers again!""You know a book is good when characters become a part of your life."In a refreshing shift from her romantic suspense and thriller novels, Amazon Top 100 Best Selling Author, Alexi Lawless has crashed onto the scene in a big way. Her debut novel, Complicated Creatures set the stage for a trilogy that features a strong female lead character, Samantha Wyatt, who critics are calling a "sexy, female James Bond."With Goddess Rising, Lawless has tracked back in time to show this internationally loved heroine at the cusp of adulthood, depicting the critical turning points that largely define the character she's become today... a formidable queen who defies all expectations.Praise for the series:

  • "I thoroughly enjoyed the author's writing style and the pace of the story. She creates wonderfully vivid images with her words, making it pretty hard not to become obsessed." - Maria's Book Blog
  • "Fast-paced, full of drama and hot as hell!" - Page to Page Reviews
  • "Mesmerizing, enthralling and captivating... an incredible read." - Aaly & the Books Blog
  • "Impressively written and well put together. The editing is sharp, the dialogue sings, and the pacing is very well done." - eReaderErotica.com
  • "The book is a real treat and a can't miss for anyone who likes Jason Bourne, Nikita, Sydney Bristow or Annie Walker with a very sweet, first love story component." - Ember, Reviewer
  • "You know the book is good when you dream of the characters." - Naneen Chace-Ortiz, Reviewer

From the Author Interview with the Author:Q: So, what prompted you to write Goddess Rising?

  • A: In the Complicated Creatures series, we meet Samantha Wyatt in her thirties. She's already a formidable character, deliciously complex and tantalizingly enigmatic. A blogger asked what she must have been like young, wondering what events occurred Samantha went through in order to become the powerful woman she is today. And I started to wonder, "If Sam is like a female James Bond, then what must James Bond have been like at 19?" Next thing you know, a draft outline on the back of a napkin while I was hiking Nepal became a full-blown novel on how this goddess was born!
Q: Will readers who've never read the series be able to enjoy this novel?
  • A: Absolutely. I wrote this story to be a standalone targeted toward fans of College Romance, Coming of Age and New Adult fiction. I felt there weren't a lot of great heroines at 19-- a flawed, yet fantastic female character readers can not only admire, but root for and be inspired by.
Q: Speaking of which, were you influenced at all by the recent groundbreaking news about women graduating from the excruciating 62-day Ranger School training in Ft. Benning?
  • A: That was just a phenomenal coincidence. That Samantha's goal is to be one of those remarkable women to make it into the special forces is fundamental to her character's focus, resilience and courage. I deeply admire Capt. Kristen Griest and 1st Lt. Shaye Haver for their amazing accomplishments and hope more girls see the limitless possibilities in their own potential. My goal is and has always been to write inspiring female characters who dare to do the unexpected.
Q: So what's next?
  • A: I'm hard at work writing Part 3 in the series. It'll answer a lot of the questions readers are dying to know! Readers and fans can stay tuned to updates, free excerpts and new releases at my website: alexilawless.com
Happy Reading!

About the Author A self-identified "corporate runaway", Alexi Lawless walked away from the Fortune 100 rat-race two years ago to pen one of the most exciting female heroines on the market in Samantha Wyatt--a powerful, take-no-prisoners heroine who's been likened to the female equivalent of James Bond, Jack Reacher and Jason Bourne.Lawless has taken the traditional thriller market by storm with a genre-bending series that's equal parts racy international espionage and ultra-sexy romantic suspense. Her latest novel, Goddess Rising, surprises fans and reviewers with a touching and introspective glimpse into the fundamental moments and decisions that make the provocative and elusive Samantha Wyatt the woman she is today.

7 of 8 people found the following review helpful. It just keeps getting better! By Diana Semmelhack I'm an avid reader...when Fifty came out I started and haven't been able to put a book down since. I rarely post reviews, but rely heavily on them when choosing a book. So I thought it's time to share. It's been a while since I was able to scream from the rooftops about how much I loved a book. Alexi has brought me a series that I not only recommend but am obsessed with! Sam is a heroine like no other. So many books today have the typical male dominant role...the billionaire, the MMA fighter, the tatoo artist, the step brother ect., no one yet can compare to the kick ass, ball busting, yet feminine Sam. She is everything and then some, wrapped up in a perfect camo printed bow.Goddess gives you a background and what made Sam who she is today. After reading it, I went back and re read the first installment of complicated creatures, and put some pieces into place. It was like watching your favorite movie and catching all the lines you missed the first time around.Without giving any spoilers, Goddess left me in limbo between team Jack and Team Wes. I was so sure of which camp I was in and then it got blown to pieces. This series has it all! Strong female, hot males, sex, suspense, whitty banter, stay up until the wee hours until your done and be a book zombie the next day kind of book. Can't wait to get my next fix!

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. I feel like I had the ADVANTAGE of reading Goddess Rising BEFORE ... By I Love To Read I feel like I had the ADVANTAGE of reading Goddess Rising BEFORE the others in the series. That way, I started off with a clean slate, not having been introduced to all the key players in the other books. I was introduced to Samantha as a young girl finding her way with the world at her feet.Goddess Rising is a beautifully written story about Samantha Wyatt, a young, rich girl trying to make her way in the world without her father's influence, and Wesley Elliott, the sexy bad boy from across the tracks who's ticket to the big leagues is his talent for photography. They both attend Texas A&M and meet in a most unconventional way, but their attraction to one another is instantaneous. As confident as Sam is in her abilities to excel in school and the challenges of the ROTC's Ranger Challenge, she's completely out of her element when it comes to personal relationships.Wes has always been the go with the flow, love 'em and leave 'em, one night stand kind of guy, but with Sam, he realizes he wants more. The question that faces them is can Sam allow herself to take a chance of giving her heart away and can Wes live up to be the kind of man Sam needs and deserves. It's obvious Alexi Lawless put hours of research into this book from the intricacies of military life, the workings of production in the oil fields of Texas and the Gulf of Mexico, the phrases and lingo of life in the South, to life on the rough side of Chicago.I highly recommend this book to anyone. There are no cliffhangers, but it's the perfect introduction to her series, "Complicated Creatures". I can't wait to move on to the next book in the series, "Complicated Creatures, Part One".

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. ... is an action/romance novel from one of my new favorite writers Alexi Lawless By Trouble&Strife Goddess Rising is an action/romance novel from one of my new favorite writers Alexi Lawless. The heroine, Sam Wyatt is a fascinating character. Flawed and kick ass at the same time. She is driven and good at what she does but is not good at everything.I had read three other stories about Sam and her friends/family and lovers: Complicated Creatures, Complicated Creatures 1.5 and Hell or High Water.I received Goddess Rising as an Advance Review Copy and although I loved the other books I didn’t think I’d find Sam: The College Years particularly exciting. Then I started with Chapter One.I devoured Goddess Rising over two nights when I really should have been doing something else. But it was so worth it. Now I will have to reread Complicated Creatures and Hell or High Water because I may have changed my mind as to who is the best man for Sam. Damn, Alexi. Not only is Sam a great character (not perfect, she learns and grows over the course of the novel) but all the other characters are fleshed out and interesting. You know the book is good when you dream of the characters - even the side characters that in the hands of a lesser writer would be forgettable. Additionally when I heard on NPR that two women had graduated the Army Ranger school I immediately thought of Sam. You know a book is good when characters become a part of your life.

Jackson and Alex are mates but she is leaving because of the violence all the time. His clan are rough around the edges and have issues controlling their bears. That is the reason primarily she is leaving although there is another reason. An abused ex-husband who is bat***t crazy. She ends up hurt and Jack comes to her rescue. Its actually sweet and she gets to know the real him instead the fighting all the time she also gets to know the other guys. They stop fighting long enough for her to breath and relax and get to know them all and to heal from her injuries. Great story and look forward to the other bears finding their mates.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Bear Lake By dodger This writer has really improved since her first stories. I'm impressed and pleased. This book was very good and I do recommend it.I'm guessing that A B Lee and M L Briers are the same person but the difference in their writing skills and styles is vast. Whereas I cannot read any of Brier's books I enjoy Lee's. I find that very confusing. One is childish and repetitive while the other is much better at telling the story without the slapstick grade school humor. Lee comes up with new and refreshing plots filled with interesting characters. This is short and sensual. It is about paranormal romance, bear shifters to be exact. I liked it.

Jackson, "Jack", is the Alpha of their all male clan of 5, and he has found his mate. Alex, is human, and while she wants Jack, she doesn't want the Alpha and the fighting that goes along with being a bear shifter. When Alex's life is in danger, she finds her Alpha bear and his clan can be more than just brawlers. A fun and steamy read. The bear clan is a fun change from their usual lycan stories. Looking forward to Chance, Shane, Marcus and Reece's stories!

A fifteen-year-old widow runs across a bridge to catch a train bound for Trichi. Sowmya is running away to make sense of the events that had seized her body and her mind, and had ripped apart her world. She is determined to flee her destiny of numbing isolation within her community, the Brahmins of the Thanjavur district in South India. Her plans pivot when she meets a devadasi--an aging dancer--in her compartment. When the woman Mallika opens her drawstring bag and buys Sowmya her dinner, Sowmya recognizes what she needs to overcome her own condition, that of a young woman in possession of a thin cotton sari, a head shorn clean, and little else. She asks Mallika how she too can achieve that kind of power--the power to open a bag and pull out money. Thus begins Sowmya's transformation in the city by the sea, Madras, which is in the grip of its own political and social changes while India is struggling to seize its independence from the imperial British raj. Here she learns the beauty of dance from Mallika, and the sweetness and agony of falling in love with a married man. The cinema brings unimagined opportunities and all the power and riches that she could desire, but it also consumes her relentlessly. When a letter arrives, Sowmya begins her quest to regain everything that had been lost when she once lived in that small village tucked into a little bend of the Kaveri River. The novel opens with the joyous marriage of the ten year old, Sowmya in the Brahmin Agraharam in South India in the early nineteen hundreds. The details of the shopping for the saris and veshties, the marudani applying, are delightful. After this, with the young newly wed husband's tragic death the prologue ends.A cruel play of destiny,!what else could it be but the play of destiny? Yet, we have an intimation of what sowmya's destiny would be, would she be subjected to the widowhood ritual of tonsure and other indignities? The writer says that while walking home with her cousins from the dance performance of a devadasi in the temple on the last night of the festivities, Sowmya "stuck her arms out and imitated the steps and gestures the devadasi made. Immediately she felt Janaki's firm grip on her shoulder, stopping her. "Behave!"But Sowmya continued to try out the movements of the dancer , when she was alone, in the bathing room, and she "discovered an exquisite bubble that filled her chest when she danced. "The rest is the unfolding of the course of Destiny, not only of Sowmya, but of all the others in the family, community and even the nation that was already way up in its struggle for independence from foreign rule, the air seemed thick with protests. However, it is the ending , the destination in Varanasi, the Holy City on the Holy river Ganga, that was so poignant, the tumult ended in peace as a natural pause !Gang maia who gathered everyone without distinction in her bosom. No one to blame, no victim , no winner, everyone has part to play , the play is of interest not the players, and so the players have to keep the play going. Life goes on despite the twists and turns.

The author does a great job painting such a vivid story, and developing characters that we truly love. As a former dancer, her descriptions of Sowmya's experiences really resonated with me and I could see all her movements in my mind's eye.Great story, richly told, and vividly described.

It has all the appeal of a cool movie like Footloose (dare to dance and face the consequences) but with the importance of a classic, timeless novel. Bilwakesh has managed to write a novel with such attention to literary detail, precision of language, and historical significance that you almost forget while you are reading it that the plot is spellbinding, surprising, and relatable. In this way, it is a sacred text. I have read my fair share of books like this that leave you so devastated with the ending that you can’t think straight for days. Sometimes endings like that seem like a shortcut to pull at the emotions of the reader. I prefer this ending that is more nuanced and realistic. It doesn’t romanticize or vilify the past and antiquated traditions. I think we look to people who break down cultural and gender stereotypes in favor of justice and progression as heroes, but Bilwakesh’s story shows how truly complicated it is. There is no winning or losing or right and wrong – there are only consequences. Everyone in our heart’s field is affected by decisions we make that are out of the ordinary. Although future generations may benefit, there are sacrifices that must be made by all the people who are connected to the “hero.”
