Physics, a castle, mysterious bites By Kate Vane The editors of New Welsh Short Stories had only two criteria, that the writer should be born or living in Wales and that the work should be originally in English. The resulting collection of nineteen stories has a wide range of themes, locations and even lengths. There is a strong emphasis on realism. Often the stories focus on the poor or excluded. In `Yes Kung Fu' by Joâo Morais the narrator becomes comically embroiled in helping a chaotic man back to his carer, disrupting the precarious order in his own life.In `Rising-Falling' by Joe Dunthorne a physics professor falls in love with a woman on the internet and travels to meet her. The author challenges the apparent predictability of the story head on through the unique voice and insights of the narrator.Other stories are more playful with form. Among these I liked `A Letter from Wales' by Cynan Jones, an odd account of a nineteenth-century researcher into children afflicted by mysterious bites, complete with diagrams.`Liar's Sonnet' by Zillah Bethell gives a haunting, childlike voice to Einstein's mysterious daughter, Lieserl. In `John Henry' by Mary-Ann Constantine, a man in crisis finds his life disrupted by visions and fragments of song.My favourite is `17' by Thomas Morris, the story of a seventeen-year-old told in seventeen short chapters. He feels his life escalate out of control as he negotiates arrest, a rampaging neighbour and wrestling women. And there's a castle. This is Wales after all.-I received a copy of this book from the publisher in exchange for an honest review.

It was full of suspense, you never could even guess what was going to happen when you turned the page. Hope Long the main character, had a way of describing her feelings in such a deep, acurate and raw way and her description of Santa Barbara, CA. was beautiful. I loved it. I will read it again. The main character is well developed as a complex person, continually finding herself in unusual circumstances that keep the reader's interest. The narration is imaginative and colorful, so that we want to keep reading and gaining insights into psychology and human behavior.

I enjoyed reading this book from start to end. The characters were well developed with their background. The plot was chillingly disturbing with an unforgettable ending. L. B. Plum painted a realistic picture of a mind of a seductive psychopath. Can't wait to read her next novel.

Now, lost in life and their professional careers, they each try to hide their loneliness from friends and family. A chance meeting while volunteering at a local mission opens possibilities neither before felt possible. Their lives are further intertwined when through their work at the mission; they meet a young teenage couple expecting a baby. Faith is tested and hope is sought when others are put first. How do you fall in love after you’ve lost the love of your life? Fall in Love again in He is Here.

Q & A with Author John Brandon Keever

Q He is Here almost become a movie before the novel was ever written, isn't that true?

A That’s correct. I had written several scripts, but He is Here resonated with those in my film circle. So I formed my production company in 2013 and began pitching to investors and producers. We had a strong team of actors and producers behind the film. I wanted to Direct. I spent over a year pitching, but it never came together. I was trying to raise nearly a million dollars for my first feature film. We raised nearly a third of our budget, but in the end, I was trying to climb Mt. Everest on my first big excursion. When I failed to raise enough money to produce the film, I took it personally. I didn’t really write or create anything original for nearly 6 months.

Q He is Here is full of powerful scenes from the very beginning like Sara grieving her husband years after he died in the Iraqi War and when a young pregnant teen is kicked out of her home by her wealthy mother, etc. Why are you willing to be so bold with these kinds of stories?

A I believe truth is best experienced. I am passionate about creating stories for the untold souls. I like revealing truths that are not a part of mainstream storylines, especially mainstream Romance or Dramatic stores. How many novels, films, or tv shows follow the story of military widows or homeless teens? Respect is critical to honorably revealing the truth in these stories. I did not want to draw an audience because of daring subject matter. I first wanted to tell the untold stories for the military widow, the homeless teen, the victim of child abuse; the unheard. I try to detail enough to be in context of the story and vague enough so that the reader can feel their way through the story based on their own past experiences or emotions.

Q Sara is a respected nurse, a loving mom, and a great sister, but she is lonely since her husband passed. Jack is a very successful Realtor and a respected businessman, yet he is a bit of a workaholic because he is still hurting since his wife died of cancer. How do you relate to Sara or Jack?

A I lost a very close friend to cancer when I was in my 20s. I was actually her prom date. We dated some after high school, but we knew we were better off friends. She had several bouts of cancer and lost her fight too young. I still think about her. Losing her gave me an appreciation for love at a young age. Loneliness is not always the loss of an emotion but often the absence of a person. Sara misses Tyler as a husband, father, and friend. But she knows he’s gone. Jack misses Lindsay deeply. He misses what they shared and regrets what could have been. Sara and Jack deal with grief in their own way. Their loneliness is in no way disrespectful of their loved ones. They experience real love. Enough time has passed that both Sara and Jack feel their hearts are missing something. Neither are really open to love until they meet one another. I do not believe love is something you prepare for, I think it’s something you find and if you have any sense; you make the most out it.

He is Here, by John Brandon Keever

From the Author Dear Reader, Hi. I'm Brandon. The Big Tall, Good, Looking Guy. Or Big B. Thanks for reading. He is Here began as a script for a Christmas play in 2012. In 2013 I turned the story into a screenplay and spent the end of that year and the beginning of 2014 trying to raise a seven figure budget to produce this story into feature film. [I am a filmmaker as well as an author.] I had the blessing of several known actors express interest in playing a few of the key roles. Naturally, I wanted to Direct. We raised nearly a third of the money, but unfortunately the investors that I met didn't want to risk such a large budget on an unknown filmmaker like me. [Ugh. That's what I said.] This was a major blow to my ego. I took several months off from any personal creative projects just to recover.   After much prayer, I began researching online and found inspiration from Author's like Joanna Penn. I could find an audience through a novel. I have other stories saved on hard drives that I had begun writing in college. I hated them so much I never sought a publisher or even tried to self-publish any of those stories. But, the more time I spent listening to other authors who had found a home for their work in the hearts and minds of fans that cherished their work I felt confident I could do the same. I simply wanted to find minds and hearts for the character's I had come to love and the story that I had poured so much of my heart and soul into. I began getting myself organized to write in 2013 and began creating this novel in October of 2014. He is Here is about love, presence, and family. Love isn't always easy to define, God's presence isn't always easy to see in our lives, and family isn't always flesh and blood. Don't take for granted anyone who loves you, any blessing you receive, or anyone you can call family. I pray you find all the love, all of God, and all the family you ever need.

From the Inside Flap "The two share a moment, both hesitant, both scared. Was this how a first date should go? What would normal people do in this situation? They would be at dinner at a nice restaurant talking about their professional careers, and their life goals, and their families, and all the normal stuff people should talk about on a first date; not this stuff. Should they stop? No. This was right, for them. This was their lives, their stories, their truth. Tonight was a much needed conversation... heart to heart, soul to soul with someone who understood because they knew."   Life has been hard for Sara and Jack. Sara lost her husband 4 years ago in the War with Iraq. Jack lost his wife to breast cancer soon after they were married. How do you fall in love after you've lost the love of your life? Fall in Love again in He is Here.

For instance, "do" was used instead of "due". It seemed that the errors increased the further I got toward the end of the book. Otherwise I would have given 4 stars.

By Brian Ruppel I'm a sucker for allegorical tales that retell well known truths in new vibrant ways. "He Is Here" is just such a story. It feels like a warm blanket by the fire on a cold Winter morning, ready to put a smile on your face. You'll probably recognize the characters, but not in this setting. Nope, this is new. This is good. I heard a rumor the author is already working on a 2nd effort. I just hope he doesn't take his sweet time, because I Am Here, too... waiting for more.

The author captured me with her humor, faith, grace under very serious life threatening circumstances but her resilience shines through and she encapsulated all the important aspects of her life, it was evident that her family was of great support and friends. The author's book touched me cause her faith in god is one of great joy to see her express her faith even thru such illness and relapses but she never gave up. This is an amazing down to earth book for everyone to read I did and was blessed and you will to.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Reverting to my youth By Ian T When I was a young boy I was always getting into trouble for being "a bit of a bookworm", to the extent that at times I could be found reading my latest book after "lights out" line-by-line, illuminated by the sliver of light that filtered into my room between the bedroom door and its jamb falling across my pillow. In these books I was transported to secret smugglers' caves, aerial dog-fights, murderous house-parties and the like. Now on the wrong side of 50 years of age, "Slave of the Lamp" transported me back to those types of exotic locations, with a liberal mix of nostalgia, comedy and adventure. Dr Fogarty is to be congratulated on the interweaving of her personal knowledge of the characters and lands with her imaginative adaptations and extensions of their stories. Tales such as these should be used to draw young readers back to the power of the written word.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. A great tale, of nicely familiar characters, that engages its target age readers and a pleasure for adults to share. By Cheryl The characters and adventures they have are both familiar and entertaining this is a great story to engage its target age and a pleasure for adult readers (including in read out loud mode) as well I'd recommend this book particularly to those just embarking into this rich genre for young readers... I look forward to the next in the series fro this new author.

It takes me back to many of the books and authors I loved as a child, although it is firmly set in the present. The settings are interesting and varied and the main characters are both endearing and resourceful. Colourful, fun and a great read, I highly recommend this book.

¿Me enseña algo El rastreador?
