By John Calvert It seems that I have spent my adult life reading books on how to write fiction with the goal that something would click and that I would "get it" and that the mysteries of how to tell a good story would be revealed. It wasn't until I read Discovering the Soul of Your Story that I ultimately acquired the tools that I had been looking for. I got it.In his own words, Roger Rueff says that he wrote "this book to reveal the details of a set of story creation and development techniques I have invented." He developed these techniques "to satisfy my need to understand storytelling on a deeper level. I did not want soft advice; I wanted hard advice - advice that I could reach for confidently to generate new stories from scratch, guide their development, and fix any problems that might arise along the way." In my opinion, he has succeeded where so many others have failed. I have now succeeded where I have failed in the past.I would recommend that a reader buy the second edition of this book. Mr. Rueff improved the terminology in the second edition and the new terms make understanding his concepts so much easier.Understanding his approach is like learning a new language. If you stick with it, the rewards will be worth the effort.

She was so enthusiastic about the book and the author's related courses that I had to check it out. I'm glad I did.Through the book, Roger lays out a series of development techniques that helped me to understand concepts that were always fuzzy to me before. His "grok" approach showed me very clearly where I was previously failing when I started with "what does my character want?" The grok approach is clearer, more precise, and leads to a better story. It helped me to find and understand my main character.Through the rest of the book, he ties the grok approach with two other techniques — thematic imprinting and meta-adaptation. These techniques made clear the storytelling process, where so many other books have fallen short, at least for me.Discovering the Soul of Your Story is a book I plan to re-read again and again. It defines a clear and simple approach that is helping me become a better writer.

Broken Rock Bay (Clan of the Ice Mountains Book 3), by C. S. Bills

About the Author C. S. Bills is a Michigan author. She writes from her office overlooking the woodlands and wetlands that surround her home. "Each day I immerse myself in the ever-changing beauty of the wilderness around me. It is from this starting place that I travel to the prehistoric world of Attu and his Clan, where challenges, opportunities, and adventures abound. Sometimes, at dusk, when the shadows are just right, I can even imagine my characters are with me, just beyond where I can see, moving among the trees and settling in for the nighttime fire, where they will gather and tell their own stories."

By C Elston I have always enjoyed reading the co-authors O'neal Gear and their "People" series and have kept an eye out for other authors of similar talent and subject matter. C. S. Bills fills the bill (no pun intended). He skillfully set the scene and carefully sculpted the characters, building a story series that definitely holds your interest and leaves you wanting to read more. I truly hope this series, covered in three books, will be continued. I want to follow Attu and his clan as they make their home and live their lives in Broken Rock Bay. I'll be watching and waiting. Mr. Bills.

Fall This is the third in the Ice Mountains Books and quite frankly, my initial reaction to C.S. Bills was trending towards "I hope this picks up soon". Then I found myself becoming more and more interested in the characters and the depth of the building relationships by the author's hand. The story line is at first glance predictable, and then comes the twists and turns. It is the promise of hope, the human condition and struggles of the characters that keeps me coming back for more. I look forward to the next publishing.

Whenever I finish one of her books, I eagerly anticipate the next one! To her credit, CS Bills tells nail-biting, cliff-hanging stories without a single word or scene that I wouldn't want my grandkids to see me reading. Her plots aren't warmed over or reminiscent of other books. They are fresh, new, and exciting. A refreshing change from most of what's available.

Overly trusting and naive Katie accepted a summer internship at a military contracted corporation, working on a nanite weapons program. But unknown to her, the program was on its last leg, and a working sample needed to be shown soon or the funding would dry-up. So the head of the program did what any mad scientist would do in such a situation… used his unpaid intern, Katie, as his guinea pig; tricking her into unknowingly ingesting several mass-producing, self-sufficient, self-powering nanites. After successfully forming a physical and psychological bond with the nanites, and becoming the corporation’s most valuable asset, Katie found herself the subject of brutal, inhuman testing. But now, to escape, Katie will have to rely on the nanites’ vast database of knowledge and uncanny adaptive abilities, along with the advanced strength and speed gifted her by their inclusion into her system.

Review "Patrick Hurd has done a crackerjack but of story telling. The dialog pops with a real feel for today's generation. The action snaps with excitement, I think even better than Scarlett Johansson's Lucy. I can't wait to see Patrick Hurd's next installment (PLEASE let there be another book in this series) of the Interns story... well done!" - Goodreads Review

This book had potential. It was non-stop action if you like that type of book. The problem was that there are a lot of mistakes in the book. I'm not talking poor grammar, but the wrong word inserted instead of a simple misspelling. Also incorrect sayings 'death keel' instead of 'death knell'.The author has obviously never had a flat on a motorcycle, explosive decompression of the rear wheel of a motorcycle will cause the bike to fishtail as the rear tire has no purchase it will fail to grasp the road. Both tires being blown out will just cause the bike to immediately flip out from under you no matter how experienced a rider you are. This is especially true with a passenger because you will not be able to work together well enough to keep the bike under control.Another issue is the two 'spies' in the book. The male is a young Bond wanna be who is just irritating and the female well, she proves this author shouldn't write female characters. Her first response to the protagonist is to refer to her as 'Bitch" and to come off with a 'you best keep your hands off my man' attitude (the other spy). The protagonist at one point early on is tortured and is still squeamish about hurting the mercenaries sent to capture her to take her back to the lab where she was tortured... so they can torture her more to study the nano-tech.This might be a good read for Teen/YA but really not up to snuff for anyone who is not looking for a mindless 'shoot 'em up' type book.

Needs work By Kindle Customer First I'd like to say this book has potential to be a good read the nannites and evil corporations was a good first start but one this book should have been longer quite a bit longer although I do get this is probably just setting the stage for later books two there were grammar errors not incredibly bad but the person view kept shifting at odd places if your gonna have the story told by a the main character viewpoint then stick with that and only use other viewpoint to bring in necessary plot points. There were some mechanics in the book that didn't really make sense like the back tire being blown out and them not crashing. Using the nannies to pull off really cool stuff is fine that's the entire point just make sure everything else works the way it should. But I have to say if you can work out the problems in this book I will definitely continue reading this series.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. This is a nice short action story By Clarinet Esq. This is a nice short action story. Think of it this way: an action short for YouTube, where the heroine develops superpowers, the mad scientist is an idiot (in a totally mad science way) and the evil company is represented by in the typically greedy, causally evil guy in charge. So, fun to read.Do not, however, think too hard about character's motivations, or peer review, or academics. Don't think too hard about plot, or science, or computers, or artificial intelligence. Don't worry about the government, or the police, or lawsuits or anything like that. This is a fun action story, so don't mess it up by thinking too much!

As the description says, after the accident only three people are left alive but it's NOT the love triangle you expect. This story is a real page turner -- full of surprises and very well written. Even the editing mistakes can't drag down the 5 star rating! I received a free copy of this book for an HONEST review.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. easy read that will appeal to all readers including By Michelle Shiers A really enjoyable, easy read that will appeal to all readers including, of course, divers and underwater enthusiasts. The first in what I hope to be a series of underwater action/adventure novels ... hope we don't have to wait too long !

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Pheia By Clare O'Beara This is a hard SF book with many similarities to the Martian, except that it occurs in inner space; the undersea trench off the Cayman Islands in the Caribbean. Diving techniques, air mixes and some engineering are all required. A submersible habitat is planned to take a team of male and female scientists down for a few weeks of study. Naturally for plot purposes all does not go well.I found the story gripping and although I read it over a few sessions I kept not wanting to stop, or thinking about the latest crisis as I did other things. Then I'd come back to the book and with my experience of demolition and tree felling to guide me, I'd say out loud to the characters, 'No, don't do that! Don't!' They never listened. No matter what drugs are injected into a human's blood, this will not keep the immense undersea pressure at great depth from crushing their internal organs. So I cannot see a habitat using the equalised pressure described here or divers emerging blithely at any point in the trench. We'll just have to take this as artistic licence. The reason I am not giving more stars is that the text is filthy with spelling and grammar issues. This version should never have seen the light of day. Sadly it must be that the author just does not know the difference, for whatever reason. If I read how a rope was pulled taught once more, when anyone knows it should be taut, I would have dropped the read, however interesting. Get it to an editor and proofreader, clean it up and re-release. This story deserves better.

It is an entertaining delight, likewatching your favorite "guilty pleasure" on TV. For me, this is sometimes exactly what I need and want. And there are enoughinsights so you won't feel like you are wasting your time.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. A beautiful and uplifting novel By Z. de Ruiter When Libby and her husband Jason exchange their busy lives in the city for taking on Jason's mother's hotel in the countryside after his father passes away, to their friends it sounds like an idyllic change of pace for the married couple. And Libby is initially excited too as she has many plans for turning the dated B&B into a modern boutique hotel that all her sophisticated friends from London will want to visit. But the renovation is a lot more stressful and expensive than Libby anticipated, putting a strain on her marriage and the already testy relationship with her mother-in-law. Even though she's spending more time with her husband than before, being far away from her friends and her old job, not to mention Jason's reluctance to communicate openly about what is really going on, makes her feel more alone than ever.A woman is walking up to the hotel when she gets hit by a car. When she wakes up in the local hospital she has no memory of why she was there or even who she is, and because there was no purse or phone found on her, her identity remains a mystery. While Libby doesn't know her, having found her right after the accident she feels an obligation to check up on Pippa, as the woman calls herself for the time being, in the hospital – and the two quickly bond over a mutual lack of friends in the area. With a similarly styled stunning cover and title, One Small Act of Kindness is definitely a continuation of the Lucy Dillon 'brand' for Hodder & Stoughton. It means that the reader instantly knows to expect a beautifully written novel filled with lovely characters and a heartwarming story. Despite the hardships the characters endure, the story was also uplifting and reading it made me feel all warm and fuzzy inside. It's basically a big, comfortable hug in the shape of a book and who doesn't love a hug that you can take with you wherever you go?Libby is the most central character within the novel and seeing a lot of the story develop from her perspective I instantly felt a connection to her and the struggles she was facing in her life. Because while on the surface the hotel may seem like an exciting challenge for those who knew Libby in her old life, there is a far more devastating reason behind the change in jobs and one that continues to make life hard for her and Jason. And Libby's mother-in-law certainly didn't help in that regards. While her back story provided some explanation for her unkindness and stubbornness, I still wanted her to give her a good shake and make her realise what a wonderful daughter-in-law she had in Libby, not to mention make her stop sulking and provide some much-needed support in what was a difficult situation for everyone.Thankfully Pippa brought a ray of sunshine and perspective into the lives of them all. While her identity was shrouded in mystery, adding an unexpected touch of intrigue to what I had assumed to be a romance novel, she was an instantly likeable character and one that I quickly fell in love with as much as I did Libby. They were both very well written and with compelling stories that went through quite a lot of twists and turns, keeping this a fascinating and unpredictable read. While One Small Act of Kindness very much focuses on the lives of Libby, Pippa and those within it, it's the titular small acts of kindness that run throughout that makes this novel so very special. In today's fast-paced age we as a society are so focused on ourselves and what's going on in our immediate vicinity, that there seems to be little time for kind gestures towards other people when it isn't needed. This book shows that it doesn't have to be a life-changing or time-consuming act of kindness that can make a world of difference to another person. So after reading this review, and of course buying your own copy of One Small Act of Kindness, have a think about what you can do to help someone else. The uplifting message of the novel doesn't have to stay confined within its pages, wouldn't it be wonderful if we can see it spread one read book at a time?

Another great read from Lucy Dillon By Chick Lit Central By Becky GulcLucy Dillon has been a firm favourite author of mine over the past few years; her books bring warmth and humour yet manage to cover some very sensitive subjects too. Her books also feature some amazing canine characters which I always love. So how would I find her latest novel, One Small Act of Kindness? The synopsis for this book grabbed my attention; I loved the idea of renovating a B&B and was instantly intrigued regarding Pippa’s story, why is no one looking for this woman? Both Libby’s and Pippa’s stories held my interest throughout. Libby and Jason although clearly very much in love have had a difficult time of it, and we only learn slowly what has tested their relationship in the past, and what is about to test their relationship once more. This is a couple that need to talk! Libby is a smart, focused, kind and loyal woman who has the patience to live with her sometimes testing mother-in-law. I loved her vision for the hotel and the images this created in my head; I really hoped her vision would become reality! Jason meanwhile seems nice enough but appears quite mysterious, what don’t we know?It was Pippa’s story that particularly stood out for me though. This is someone who was on her way to Libby’s hotel when she is hit by a car, suffering from memory loss after the accident and with no one coming to find this woman can only hope her memory comes back in time or that someone comes to find her. With no phone or ID on her how long will ‘Pippa’ exist, and when will she have her own identity back? Thankfully the lovely Libby puts Pippa up whilst she recovers.I thought Pippa’s story was revealed at the right pace, not too quick and not too slow. By the time we learn of Pippa’s past she’s a character that we’ve grown to love even if we know little about her. I felt incredibly sad at times, and anxious about how things would turn out but happy with the outcomes. Then there is the obligatory dog, Lord Bob, I just loved him! Excellent and funny observations of canine behaviour as always! My only negative point on the whole book would be that I felt Pippa’s character deserved a more detailed ending, it seemed to come and go quite quickly considering the length of the book so felt a little rushed. The book lived up to its synopsis for me, another great read from Lucy and this is an author who just keeps getting better and better in my opinion. Thanks to Hodder and Stoughton for the book in exchange for an honest review.

This series would make a great television mini-series or even a movie. I don't typically read books but this kept me on the edge of my couch. I look forward to more works from this author.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. i was left speechless!!! By Not Another Damn Blog-Blog This book...... It started where the first one ended.... The things that happen.... I was just sooooo... Dammit!!Ok this book is exactly what the title says! It will break you! Read Fractured first or you’ll be lost!Ethan shows a whole new side to himself in this book, he gets more protective, more demanding, just more!Nevaeh is so strong! Being kidnapped with Ethans brother Jared brings them so much closer together. The struggle of trying to stay alive while waiting to be rescued broke me.... I cried for them both so hard!I don’t know what I can say that won’t give this book away? It’s a novella, so it’s fast paced, and there are so many surprises! Lineage, lovers, ex’s! You name it, you’re gonna be shocked to the core!!One of my favorite things about this series is that there’s love, sweet and tender in all forms, but there’s love in it’s ugly form and how we deal with what happens when you’re entire foundation is shocked to its’ core!! The suspense is off the chains agonizing!!!Nevaeh is still a very Broken woman! Ethan is now a Broken man trying to fix what has happened! And in the end you’ll be left Broken too!!If you need a good cry and some heart break this is the series to read!! If you need hope from a dark place, this is the series to read!!!I give this book 5 amazing stars from NADBB!!!Reviewed by Krystal.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. An edge of your seat thriller and love story! By Teri Caiazzo This book picks up where "Fractured Souls," left off, it finds Naveah and Jarod still still in the basement of an undisclosed location. We find a few details in this book that clears up some unanswered questions that some may have while reading the first book of course I won't give those secrets away, you may still want to read the first book, it's a short novella, and worth reading. As Ethan arrives at his mother's house, to tell her what is going on with Jarod, he finds there are many drug addicts, sleeping on the floor of his mother's house, and he throws them out, as he goes to his mother's bedroom. When he reaches there, the door is locked, and he tears the door off, chasing the man that was in bed with his mother, and tells his mother to get downstairs because he needs to talk to her. She has no idea what is going on with her son, and what kind of danger he is in, as they start speaking in the kitchen, Devon Neveah's brother knocks on their door.Devon has been away to the Middle East, where he has been for the last four years, trying to make something of his life, and for someone for his sister to be proud of, as well as to look up to. His team was ambushed, and he was in the hospital, state side, but unable to reach his sister, by her phone, which said it wasn't in service, or by landline, his father didn't answer. Officers went to the house, and no one answered, he had no idea what was going. Sure Naveah had told him a letter about the fact that she was dating Slim, but he couldn't do anything from so far away, even though he didn't like the idea. When he reaches the home of Ethan's mom, Ethan answers the door, and he asks if anyone has seen his sister, Ethan invited him inside, because he was just starting to inform his mother, about the kidnapping threat he received from Slim, and about his relationship with his sister. It was decided upon a plan to go get them away from Slim, and this came upon the help of Ethan''s mother, Ashley's confession, Slim and Jarod were half brothers. As it turns out Jarod's father, who was now a politician, use to be a drug pusher that got Ashley hooked on drugs. Once Ethan and Devon joined forces, they were certain they would find their siblings alive, Devon suggested that to keep Ethan safe, he should stay at his house, he felt if Ethan was alone he was leaving himself open to Slim's henchmen. They were awake until late, using the internet to find any possible leads on where they could be, when Ethan decided he needed a rest, and they both called it a night. It was after Devon was already in his room, that Ethan realized he didn't bring a bath towel for himself, and went to Devon's room to ask where they kept the towels, He entered Devon's room without knocking, and found an angry Devon, that Ethan entered before he shouted to the close door that Ethan could enter. He was home on a honorable discharge from the army, because he lost leg, but he wasn't ready to let anyone know that for a while, Ethan was the first to know. This book was excellent, it drew me in from beginning to end, of course I read the first book, which ended on a cliffhanger, but it was well worth the wait to read this installment. There is still anther book to read of this series, which I'm sure will be great, and tie up any and all loose ends. I hope you enjoy this book as much as I did. Happy reading.
