6 of 6 people found the following review helpful. First books are easy to pick out even if you don't know they ... By Deb Kingdom of Scars is Eoin Macken's first novel. There is all kinds of demographic info and a synopsis of the book above so I won't go into that here. Let's just say I was looking forward to this book with excitement and trepidation. Excitement because, hey, this is as my daughter would say, my celebrity crush's first book. Trepidation because it's his first book. First books are easy to pick out even if you don't know they are the author's first novel. Awkward phrasing, places where the words are just words not part of a flow of story, over use of adjectives and adverbs. Heck, even John Grisham's first novel wasn't all that good. Was there some of that in Kingdom of Scars? Yes, however very little. Honestly I don't believe I would have thought this was a first novel, it doesn't read like one.Macken writes like the photographer that he is, he creates incredibly visual images with his words. The first few chapters are like looking at a series of photographs, beautiful, haunting and each telling a story. That was slightly distracting to me, it seemed that each chapter was a vignette, a compelling story only thinly connected to the others around it. Later chapters, however wove together beautifully into a story. I can't say if the writing changed or I became more involved in the story or if it was some combination of the two. All I can say is I was drawn into the story and couldn't put the book down.My favorite line of the novel is in the prolog. I won't quote it all as it might be a spoiler, but one phrase, "they brandished their middle fingers like weapons." In my opinion this sets the stage for the whole novel. It is starkly visual and hints at the underlying malevolence that permeates much the novel. Anyone who has seen some of the films that Macken has released will know he does subtle malevolence very well, he does it well in prose too. It is however not all dark, there is a scene the middle of the book where Sam expresses the doubts of young men regarding young women. I had to laugh, even at my age I still thought boys weren't driven by the same doubts as girls. I remembered my fifteen year old self thinking those very things. Macken does light just as well as dark.The group of young men in the story seem driven by elements of "Stand by Me" as well as "Lord of the Flies". It is derivative of neither, it stands on it's own merit. It's well worth reading and not just because Eoin Macken, tv star, wrote it. Kingdom of Scars is more than just the novel my celebrity crush wrote, it's a darn good book.

By Ronni Pudding On the face of it Sam is a scowling, belligerent, adolescent with an arrogant gait who'd make you want to cross the road to avoid him. Kingdom of Scars prizes open Sam's menacing facade revealing the complex and surprisingly sensitive workings of a teenage boy's mind as he stumbles down the potholed path of first sexual encounters, negotiates local bullies and struggles, above all else, for the acceptance of his peers.Eoin Macken's vivid prose paints a detailed picture of adolescent life on the outskirts of a pre-mobile phone Dublin. He offers the reader a 'no holds barred' window into the world of a group of seeming rebels without a cause, who vie and buck for attention and standing amongst themselves. Macken forcibly grabs your attention and your heart and leads you on Sam's gripping voyage of self-discovery and his route to coming of age.Men and older boys will relate to this book and women and girls will have their eyes opened by it. This book transported me back to a time when all senses were heightened and my own fumbling mistakes were recalled with both horror and delight. It's a fabulously good read.

I was on a train back from an art exhibition in Milan and looking for a good book to read to cut myself off from the annoying voice of the phone addicted girl sitting in front of me. As part of my job I read many children's and YA's books, so - after checking out some feedback on Amazon - I decided to download #kingdomofscars kindle version. As I started reading, being an illustrator and book designer, I immediately visualized the pages of a vivid and well depicted storyboard and I couldn't hear the chatty girl speaking on her phone any longer. I simply couldn't stop reading and I remember of having thought that the train must have been a high speed train because it didn't even occur to me that I had almost reached my destination as I read the unheralded poem that the author wrote as an epilogue.This book is a very powerful time machine that "teleports" grown-up readers back to their teenage past - recent or not. For sure, the most amazing feature of this literary "transporter" is that its realistic and honest prose involves you also physically not only mentally. As the climax increases, you cease to be a simple hologram and teenage emotions overwhelm you. Then you go back to the time when you used to wonder what's on your partner's mind when you are about to do it and you actually feel that undisclosed desire of being kissed, touched and possessed for the very first time. Again.@eoincmacken's Sam is such a complex character that you don't want the book to end so you might have a chance to listen again to his unexpectedly pure and innocent thoughts bravely disguised as silences and introversion. And I used the adverb unexpectedly on purpose because I definitely didn't know that a guy could be so fragile, sensitive, uncertain since very few writers - specially YA ones - are able and willing to provide their female readers with such a candid exploration of the remote corners of male youthful uncertainties and sexual expectations.#kingdomofscars's a blast from a past when others' acceptance and approval are imperatively necessary to you because you still don't know that you already are a valuable human being. What Sam is experiencing is that period of life that we all go through awkwardly, stumbling over ourselves, our fears, our doubts. As a graduate in psychology, @eoincmacken thoroughly unfolds the lines of human soul painting a portrait we can all identify with.Beautiful penmanship, sophisticated writing style, compelling storyline and perfectly drawn characters are the pivotal features of this debut work to me. This book is an extraordinary example of #YA literature. I look forward to reading the second novel by this talented author.ConfessionWhen I particularly like an e-book, I usually feel the need to buy also the paper version and add it to my real library. I couldn't help myself. A couple of days after that trip back from Milan, I received my bright new copy of #kingdomofscars smelling my favorite smell in the world - paper.
