Excerpt from The New HeavensFourteen years ago, in a book entitled "The Study of Stellar Evolution" (University of Chicago Press, 1908), I attempted to give in untechnical language an account of some modern methods of astrophysical research. This book is now out of print, and the rapid progress of science has left it completely out of date. As I have found no opportunity to prepare a new edition, or to write another book of similar purpose, I have adopted the simpler expedient of contributing occasional articles on recent developments to Scribne's Magazine, three of which are included in the present volume.I am chiefly indebted, for the illustrations, to the Mount Wilson Observatory and the present and former members of its staff whose names appear in the captions. Special thanks are due to Mr. Ferdinand Ellerman, who made all of the photographs of the observatory buildings and instruments, and prepared all material for reproduction. Nicely plotted, well-turned science fiction novel By Ian Oakes It has been a while since I read fiction of any sort and this was a fun book to jump back in on. It opens strongly and ends with one heck of a teaser for what comes next and between the two moments the reader gets to follow the action across a broad canvas in which characters are joined through layers of intimacy, the intimacy of friends, of family, of lovers. While a work of science fiction that stretches between solar systems, the core tensions have a mythic flavor.In some places, I wish the book had lingered a little longer with some of those intimacies, that some of the more important intimacies could have had more room to flower for the reader. Similarly, I wish the end had taken just a little longer to arrive. Still, if I wanted more of that, it was because I was enjoying what I was getting and was a little disappointed to have no more of it to read.Without trying to spoil any of the action, let me say I enjoyed the way in which the titular 'bridge' (initially portrayed as a royal secret that gives them privileged access to immortality) of the story became more ambivalent and mysterious as its true source became apparent to the characters.

By Josh D This is an excellent Sci-Fi novel that explores the idea behind the afterlife, and the lengths some people would do to find this afterlife.I found the characters very likable, and could easily see this book being made into a movie. The novel itself does a superb job of handling multiple point-of-view characters without lingering too long on any individual, which keeps the main storyline moving along at a brisk pace.I am going to read this book again, and cannot wait for the second book to come out. Highly recommended, I believe the author has a great and refreshingly original perspective on the concepts provided in this book.Go read it, it is definitely worth your time!

Authors LT Ryan and CG Cooper 'bundle' up with their earliest releases for a killer presentation. 910 pages of non-stop action, mayhem and chaos will keep the reader on their toes.Jack Noble and his partner Bear are the stars in LT's books whereas Cal Stokes, USMC Staff Sergeant remains the driving force in CG's. One must remember that there really isn't such a person as an ex USMC SGT!This superb collection of four books include two by LT Ryan - 'Noble Beginnings and 'A Deadly Darkness'. The two by CG Cooper are 'Back to War' and 'Council of Patriots - Corps Justice 2'. Each of these books is worthy of a solid five star rating for character development, plot and above all, for me, non-stop action.I was completely surprised when I saw the price of $0.0 for the four books. Don't see how one could go wrong even if you have read some of the four titles.Most highly recommended.

I started with the three book bundle, and have progressed up to book 10. I'm not a fast paced reader because I'm retired and don't have to hurry to do anything anymore; but there are parts of these novels that make it hard to put down and make you hurry to see what is going to happen next. Some of the characters are very complex, but well developed, especially over a number of books. You learn more and more about each of the main characters in every one of the succeeding novels. After reading several in the series, you feel like you know many of the characters personally. The author is not afraid to kill off a main character here and there which is always a surprise. There are some slow parts, but they are generally necessary to develop a complicated and action filled plot or scene, of which there are many.

By Natasha Bennett I have reviewed R.J Erbacher in the past with his previous novel Coffee and Fate, which is a great read. This book is a collection of stories and poems, fifteen in all, across different genres of science fiction, fantasy, and horror. All of them are connected by the idea that each character is confronted by a 'dark passage', one that they must confront.The writing style of R.J Erbacher is very intoxicating, with a great deal of descriptive language and character development to draw the reader in. This is the type of collection where there is something for everyone, and your favorite story may vary on personal taste. Personally, my favorites were The House of Flana, Leap of Faith, The Family Plan, and Angel of the Blade, with my least favorite being Between, Circle of Keys, the Mission, and Love Letters. For the stories I did like, however, I was on pins and needles to see what happened next.Some of the stories I disliked were too short for me to really get invested in, but Love Letters was a curious dislike, as that was the favorite story of the author. Personally, I found it too brutal that would have only paid off if the characters had been developed for far longer, and unfortunately there wasn't enough of that to make the conclusion worthwhile. Still, even the stories I disliked had a very strong element to them. As an extra bonus, the end of the book has behind-the-scenes details of each story.4.5 out of 5.
