About the Author Born and raised in Los Angeles, John W. Harding is an award-winning entertainment writer and editor. His features and reviews on film and theater have been published in the Washington Post, the Baltimore Sun, and numerous other newspapers and magazines. He was arts editor for Patuxent Publishing, Times-Mirror and the Tribune Company before leaving newspapers in 2012 to pursue fiction writing. “The Ben-Hur Murders” grew out of his lifelong love of early Hollywood lore. While this is a novel and a work of imagination, the factual background comes from research by the author into primary letters and documents stored at the USC Film and Television Library in Los Angeles, and from archival material at the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. John currently lives in Maryland with his wife and daughter.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. A Nice Way to Learn Some 1920s History By Dana G. I like the people stories very much. They evoke "memories" of, and deep feelings for, the time when they occur. I think these feelings come from hanging out for two years at the UCLA Film Department, where I saw so many silent movies, and later in Hollywood, where I lived for about 10 years.I don't know if people born after 1960 are an automatic demographic, so I doubly recommend the book to them. Unless they are or were film students, they're not likely to have a prior acquaintance with Shearer, Arbuckle, Pickford, Fairbanks, Keaton, etc., etc. But for me, born in the late 40s, with grandparents who were sexy in the 1920s, it was a lot of fun to imagine being with those famous sexy people, in those magic times. Well, maybe “fun” isn’t the best word. Maybe if I were in the main character’s shoes, I’d be painfully envious of the wealth and apparent happiness around me, without his commendable modesty and Midwest equanimity. Either way, the stories really resonate, especially about Ramon Novarro.The writer does a nice job of weaving in so much that was going on then, and in a small space: the sex scandals, the Hollywood wealth, the antisemitism, the dreams of stardom, the cruelty to animals, the attitudes toward unions and "lower people," the personalities of stardom and moguldom, World War I and its aftermath, the perils of the world, the heartbreak and violence and goodness of life, and much more. He does it in a way that makes his "history lessons" pleasant and barely noticeable as such.The bigger story of the chariot race and the murder is well worth the read. I don't want to say more, for fear of hinting at the resolution. The mystery, though, is more in the realm of what happens to the perps.As for style and so forth, the first-person approach, with lots of dialogue, makes things zip along. Unlike with a lot of modern fiction, the story here doesn't have to be discovered by a hard-working reader up for a challenge; the story grabs and moves.

The craft is in good hands here and I only hope there are more By Alida Brill Calling all movie buffs, Silent Era fans, mystery lovers and amateur sleuths!This is your book.John Harding brings the keen eye of a journalist to this true story. Remarkably, for a first novel, he delivers this fictional rendition with the sensitivityof an experienced mystery writer. The craft is in good hands here and I only hope there are more. In the meantime, feast on this one.

Novel About a 1920s Silent Hollywood Epic Gives Modern-Day Action Movies a Run for their Money By J Wynn The excitement and danger of the chariot race that made this silent movie a hit is the culmination of "The Ben-Hur Murders," and it does not disappoint. Novelist Harding leads up to it and describes it with page-turning verve. The Hollywood background is meticulously researched, and the combination of real and fictitious characters has an E. L. Doctorow flair.
