I also write paranormal, so was drawn to this book right away. It's gruesome, believable, and just sick enough that you hope never to encounter a psychopathic serial killer as sadistic and twisted as David. Ms. Martin has a great mind and weaves a tale as dark and disturbing as I've ever read. I would not hesitate to recommend this book to anyone fascinated with murder mysteries about serial killers, or the paranormal. Most excellent!

By Jim Goforth This review is from an ARC copy of Angie Martin’s ‘Conduit’.Some writers have the capacity to snare you from the word go and hold you in thrall throughout the entire duration of a book. Angie Martin is one of those writers.‘Conduit’ is an absorbing psychological thriller of a work which blends in more than a little splash of the paranormal as it gets underway with a suitably creepy and curious prologue setting the tone of the book and sinking claws of intrigue in from the word go.After this tense and dark intro, Martin then introduces us to the principal character of Emily Malone, who is a private investigator of Malone and Reid Investigators (the Reid section completed by business partner, Cassie Reid, another pivotal character). While these ladies have spent seven years together in business contending with the standard sort of cases one might expect from the private investigation game such as suspicious women certain their husbands are in the midst of illicit affairs and so forth, the psychic abilities of Emily are about to go into overdrive on a case that will endanger their lives and others involved with them.Running parallel to Emily’s psychic gifts pushing to the fore leading to her being haunted by voices and subject to apparent automatic writing, is the story of detective Lieutenant Lionel Edwards who is on the trail of a serial killer leaving a trail of dead bodies strewn across his jurisdiction, mutilated young women each left with a letter carved into their skin.Suffice to say, these problems plaguing Emily pull her into the murderous world of insidious murderer David Noakes, pitching her into an epic nightmare, considering she is his chief target, somebody he fully believes he has a connection with.‘Conduit’ is full of interesting, engaging characters, even the immensely flawed ones such as the sadistic fiend responsible for the abductions and murders, and great interactions between them. The subplot involving Emily’s burgeoning relationship with Jake Hanley, as well as her exchanges with former flame Nathan temper the grimness and building tension created by the cat and mouse game with the killer.Without wanting to add any spoilers here, you need to read this yourself to see just how this whole enthralling concoction pans out, I will just say that this is the type of crime thriller laced with supernatural facets that can seize you and shake you up, and make you only too aware that there are some truly reprehensible characters out there.Tightly written, loaded with suspense and wholly captivating, this is a cracking good read.

20 of 21 people found the following review helpful. I tried hard not to sympathise with the serial killer but... By Hanna I received an ARC copy of this book from the author in exchange for my fair and honest review. And I must say – it might be a long book but it definitely is a quick read! It's really gripping, and if you're a fan of suspense, you will just dive in!In fact, you have three plot-lines here. First, there's the one concentrating on the killer who is my personal favourite in this story. Smart and strong (and creepy) but in a way interesting and intriguing. Probably raising more questions than answering them. With every bit he's revealing more about himself but it doesn't mean he's easier to understand. Then there's the main character, Emily Monroe, who discovers a strange, paranormal connection to the killer. She's a private investigator who needs to decide - it's either her or those other innocent women. And then there's the police and their ways of dealing with the crime. Always my favourite part of crime fiction, and here – it's thorough and intense as a crime story can get.I'm not going to spoil the plot for you. But if you want to read something that will make you uneasy when staying home alone in the evening – Conduit is the story to read. There's crime, there's a paranormal twist, there's an intriguing killer and a strong main character... what else to want? Enjoy!

Sting of the Drone: A Novel, by Richard A. Clarke

From Booklist Clarke has served in the White House so his expertise in counterterrorism brings a sense of reality to what might have been just another technothriller showcasing the military and its high-tech weaponry. A drone is utilized on a Kill Call and explodes over its target successfully. But a survivor demands justice and is able to use his connections to put targets on the operators of the drones. Remote operators used to watching events thousands of miles away are suddenly being picked off one by one. Clarke does a terrific job showcasing how the drone program works and revealing something about the men and women behind the scenes who use the machines. Readers who enjoy learning about technology but who don’t mind that the characters are secondary will eat this up. Clarke’s name alone will guarantee some demand. --Jeff Ayers

Review

“Sting of the Drone explores a premise that members of the intelligence community have been kicking around for years: What would happen if the targets on the receiving end of a killer drone decided to strike back? As you read Sting of the Drone you get the sense that it isn't fiction at all. Clarke has written a classic in the genre of what is known as insider fiction--a novel or, more often, a thriller inspired by real episodes…Sting of the Drone stands above the rest…This is riveting reading.” ―The Washington Post

“What Tom Clancy did for submarines, Richard A. Clarke does for drones. Fascinating and frightening, Sting of the Drone moves as fast as the new kind of warfare that it depicts, with authentic details that only someone with the author's impressive insider credentials could know. This first-rate thriller…a cross between a techno-thriller and a docu-thriller, ought to be required reading for anyone who wants to know the current status of the battle against terrorism.” ―David Morrell

“Sting of the Drone is a jet-fueled race through a world where the sky itself can be your worst enemy.” ―Seattle Post-Intelligencer

“Insider knowledge of politics paired with amazing state-of-the-art technical details fuels this realistic nonstop action thriller…[Clarke] has set the standard by which all such titles in this growing subgenre will be measured.” ―Publishers Weekly (starred review)

“On rare occasions a thriller comes along that turns out to be prophecy: Sting of the Drone is one of them. This rip-snorting thriller may be the best unclassified peek you will ever get on the new high-tech offensive in the war against terrorism. A seminal, prophetic, troubling must-read.” ―Stephen Coonts

“Clarke does a terrific job showcasing how the drone program works and revealing something about the men and women behind the scenes who use the machines.” ―Booklist

“This one smacks so much of reality you'll swear it's real. Written in a deft hand, by a man who knows what he's talking about, the take-no-prisoners plot serves up a banquet of high drama, action, and adventure. A great read.” ―Steve Berry

“It's rare a novel is written ahead of the headlines, but the plot of Sting of the Drone is just that book. If you've wondered what it's like to be inside the U.S. Predator drone program, your wait is over. Prepare for your hand to take hold of the joy stick, your heart to lodge firmly in your throat. Tom Clancy takes to the air. Put this book on your radar.” ―Ridley Pearson

“Exciting and disturbing…There may be no better person to write this story than Clarke, who brings his deep subject knowledge to the pages.” ―Kirkus Reviews

“Sting of the Drone is a riveting page-turner that goes deep into the complex world of those who hunt with, and are hunted by, military drones. Rich with detail and informed by his expertise in national security, Richard Clarke brings this hidden world to vivid life.” ―Jeff Abbott

Interesting Ideas, Wooden Storytelling By Kevin Joseph Richard Clarke's Sting of the Drone is a fictionalized examination of the Obama Administration's use of remotely-piloted aircraft (commonly referred to as drones) as our preferred way to eliminate potential terrorists around the world. To Clarke's credit, he provides a fairly balanced look at the arguments in favor of and against this program, letting the reader decide whether the global war on terrorism is an end that justifies what amounts to targeted assassinations of those perceived to pose a threat to U.S. interests. As is often the case in these types of novels, however, the characters, plot and setting seem to exist only as a way to help frame the author's arguments and showcase insider knowledge. The choppy chapters, constantly flitting between viewpoints of multiple characters, also prevent the novel from developing an effective flow and make it difficult to form a bond with any of the protagonists. So five stars for the ideas and fascinating insider details, two stars for the storytelling, resulting in a three-star overall rating.

Great premise from a talented author By SarahSmith I received an ARC from the publisher in exchange for an honest review.First off I have to say this story had so much promise and I was very interested to read it. I have heard great things about Richard A. Clarke, even though I have not yet read anything by him, and was very eager to read one of his works. That said I can only give this 3 stars (2.5 if this was allowed). The idea of the story was very interesting and relevant and hooked me from the excerpt, unfortunately the narrative style and the shear number of characters introduced throughout the book had me losing interest. The narrative style did not instill any connection to the characters or events for me. The amount of characters introduced throughout the book was also problematic for me, it was hard to keep them all straight. I was about 1/3 of the way through the book before I really started to feel like the story was grabbing me, but again with the narrative style and the numerous characters it was hard to hold my interest. The last few chapters were amazing though, and that's why I gave this book three stars. The ending was very well done and thought provoking. The hairs on the back of my neck stood up with the possibilities of what could/will/might happen. If you're already a fan of Richard A. Clarke you will most likely love this. Unfortunately for me this was just not my cup of tea.

Decency is a more exhausting state than its opposite By michael a. draper Readers curious about the U.S. Predator program can get an insider's look with this dandy novel. The book explodes with action as Clarke describes the leading pilots of the drones and the intelligence personnel who run the program. There has been such success with drone strikes that one of the Arab leaders calls a meeting. He is the leader of the Qazzani Cartel who deal in heroin, weapons, gold and electronics. They also enjoy killing Americans. They have a two fold plan which is to happen at Christmas time. On one hand bombs will go off in key American cities, in the other, with the help of Ukrainian computer hackers, they will strike against the drone pilots and destroy drones on the ground.Clarke details the successes of the drone program but also conveys the bad publicity that sometimes occurs. He also describes the meetings in Washington where suitable targets are chosen. He demonstrates how friendly countries have benefited from the drones taking out terrorist who had planned to take actions to destabilize the governments. This is so successful that the Cartel devises a way to set up a drone strike that made it look like the US doesn't care about the innocent lives lost. The leaders of the drone program also have to deal with politicians who have forgotten what happened on 9-11 and want to curtail drone activity. Intelligence personnel object to this and feel that it's the best program we have. This action based novel shows good suspense as we follow the activities of the terrorists as they take actions in the days prior to Christmas and we wonder how the terrorists can be identified and stopped.

But as soon as the drive is in his hands, his boss is murdered and Kenneth becomes the next target. With nowhere left to turn, he reaches out to Emma for help―but that only puts them both in danger. Emma James just wants to settle into her new job and provide a good life for her little girl. That is all threatened when she gets a flash drive with information on it that points to an imminent terrorist attack on U.S. soil. With her choices dwindling and her vulnerabilities made crystal clear, Emma is pushed to the limit by those who want her dead and the rest of the country to suffer. How far will she be forced to go to save the lives of everyone around her, including those she loves? Kenneth and Emma have to find a way to work together to stop the terrorists, but it's the most difficult trial of their lives―and the verdict will be life or death. On the Edge (Book Two) Dylan Campbell, a CSIS officer, has been undercover hundreds of times before and is ready to get out of the game. But before he can tell his bosses at the Canadian spy agency, he discovers a terrorist plot that could take him―and millions of others―out permanently. Getting the information up the chain of command proves complicated, though, when Dylan's cover is blown and he's captured and thrown in an African prison. Will he be the first test subject for the new and deadly virus about to be unleashed on the world? American CIA officer Elizabeth Spencer is undercover for one reason―to find the virus being weaponized at a private hospital in Africa. When she meets Dylan, a Canadian photojournalist, she uses him to strengthen her story that she's only there to help. But the more she works with Dylan, the more the lines between professional and personal get blurred. She knows better than to get involved with someone while on assignment and the reason for that rule hits home when the terrorists’ move up their timetable and Dylan is put in grave danger. Can she stand by and watch him die? With everything on the line, Dylan and Elizabeth have one chance to stop the terrorist attack before it reaches North America―but they have to make it to Greece. Can they break Dylan out of prison and stay alive long enough to prevent the release of the virus? Or will one or the other be called upon to offer the ultimate sacrifice? Time Will Tell (Book Three) Undercover operative Jason Wright and his partner Kamal were left for dead in Iran---casualties of a war on terror. But Jason survived and he's out for revenge. He's selling his country's secrets to the highest bidder and he doesn't care who gets it---as long as he gets paid and Kamal's death is avenged. Andrew Blythe, a Canadian CSIS agent, races against time to stop the information exchange, knowing that a dangerous terrorist organization will use it to gain control of the Baku oil leases in the Caspian Sea. With those leases, they will be able to finance a weapon of mass destruction---and kill thousands of innocent people. But things don't go as planned and Andrew finds himself wounded and on the run, unsure of who to trust. Desperate, he takes Ashton Carlson's car, and pulls her into the web of espionage that is tightening like a noose around him. Forced to keep her with him for safety's sake, Andrew isn't prepared for the feelings she stirs in him. But with danger around every turn, Andrew knows time is running out for both of them. Can he stop the terrorists' plans and keep Ashton from being killed? Or will he have to make the ultimate sacrifice to save them all?

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Romantic Suspense Trilogy By Debra Erfert This is a boxed set of Julie Coulter Bellon's Canadian Spy Series. I got them all in one purchase. Easy peasy! I started reading Ms. Bellon's "Hostage Negotiation Series" a couple of years ago, starting with "All Fall Down". Absolutely loved them. While I was waiting on the next book in that series to come out I decided to get my fix of Bellon's talent by going back and reading her "Canadian Spy Series" books. First up was "THROUGH LOVE'S TRIALS".Kenneth King is a teacher who changes his career because his wrongly charged fiancée commits suicides when her attorney drops the ball on her defense--and he becomes the lawyer that his fiancée should've had. That's all I'm going to tell you about the story. It's sufficient to say that the suspense starts from the very first scene, and keeps building. I was amazed at all the seemingly small details that are scattered in each chapter that impact the lives of Kenneth, and of Emma, the single mother and attorney he becomes involved with. Bellon is an expert of writing suspense, giving out clues close enough together that kept me riveted to my chair. What a great adventure!Book two in this series is "ON THE EDGE".It’s said opposites attract, but what if you have a ruggedly handsome, undercover, Canadian Intelligence Officer fall for a beautiful American woman who turns out to be a CIA operative working to discover the same time-sensitive terrorist plot, yet they don’t know it? What you have is a well-written, impressively developed suspense story that will keep you entertained. Well done, Ms. Bellon!"TIME WILL TELL" is the third and final book.I’m a hopeless romantic—take my heart and make it dance with passion. I also love a good suspense story—basically my heart does the same dance if the writing is great. If you can weave those two things in together, then I’m hooked and I’ll follow the author around like a devoted puppy. And Julie Coulter Bellon does both of these so well. In TIME WILL TELL, Ashton Carlson suffers through deep tragedy—and I cried. That’s emotional writing. And the suspense kept me turning the e-pages. I will follow Ms. Bellon’s career… everywhere.

I am excited to be able to start another series since I am almost done with the Hostage Negotiation ones. The suspense in her novels is awesome! You are hooked from the start and although they have a bit of clean romance they have enough action that they are great for any reader. I know that my teenager will love her books! I love that she is able to write so much action and suspense yet keep them clean from bad words and such. Just like anything else you don't need smut to sell a great book (or movie). Julie definitely proves that in her books! If you haven't tried her books yet you should!Note: I was gifted this book by the Author in exchange for an honest review! On the EdgeIf you have read other books by Julie this one is just as great as the others? Edge of your seat suspense! If you haven’t read one yet this would be a great one to start with. I love that this one included a woman as an Agent you don’t see that very often and typically you think of it as a man’s job. Julie has a way of writing that helps you believe the woman character is just as strong as the men! The terrorist plot in this story scares me. I am sure that this has been attempted at some point or that it will be and that is frightening. I also enjoyed the ending of this book. That the happily ever after was something that they had to work for and that it didn’t just happen naturally. That is something you don’t see very often in books. I thought it was a great touch! As always I loved reading one of Julie’s books!Note: I was gifted this book by the Author in exchange for an honest review!

Growing up in the '50s and '60s Jill and Jay explore the era through contrasting perspectives. They are intrinsically different...or are they? Jill's background is working-class Tyneside. Her family life is happy, if dysfunctional. Despite woeful schooling, Jill is a wonderful learner and her intellectual mentors, the 'lit twins', are destined to be a lasting influence. Blessed with modesty and a magnetic personality, she mesmerises the many young men and women who meet her. Jay enjoys strong parental support and an idyllic childhood. He is touched by Autolycus and becomes a snapper-up of unconsidered trifles in middle-class Lancashire and Norfolk. However, he can be a bit of a jerk, and is full of contradictions. This, and the events that unfold, sequester him from his peers, which Jay relishes! 'Chalk for Cheese' is about two individuals trying to find themselves (and unwittingly one another) in a changing world.

About the Author Ossie Hopkins read Literature at Durham, and then taught English and rock climbing in a seventies comprehensive. He progressed to management - apprentice to the chief education officer, proofreading. Just when you thought you were learning to write along came the big blue pencil. A Master's at Manchester helped the career, but not the writing. As deputy director with Birmingham LEA he produced plenty of sound-bites for the dailies, Central TV and Pebble Mill but somehow never got round to 'real' writing.Later he became throttlebottom-in-chief at Ribble Valley Council. My, but it was cold up there. And lonely. Maybe if we turned things upside down... Now we can see how many people we're there to support. So leadership is just like teaching - helping people grow. Must get round to writing some of this down. Whoops! Palace revolution! Ossie leaves the same way he arrived: fired with enthusiasm!Still, one door closes... And here's a brand new international institute for customer service looking for advocacy in the public sector. Further corridors-of-power to tramp, but again, more PowerPoint than authorship! At last... The opportunity! Supporting his son's haulage business with eighteen-hour days on the road, Ossie can no longer avoid the challenge of that first book in the series...

So I was flattered and nervous when he asked that I consider writing a review for Chalk for Cheese. I had read much of the first draft when he decided to do a serious rewrite. I was anxious to see the final book. It was worth the wait.It is a coming of age story in post WWII Britain of two very different children. Jay comes from a supportive upper middle-class family, Jill comes from Geordie working class family struggling to make it. Each separate chapter provides an increasing amount of detail in the life of either Jay or Jill. The accumulation of their experiences and the passage of time forms each child's growth and the reader's interest moves along with them at a quick pace. And along the way one learns about English geography, ornithology, rock climbing, contemporary music and literature and and the reader gets to recall and relive the anxieties of their own coming of age story. But they live very separate lives and the reader must agonize about when, how and if they will meet. Surely, they meet and fall in love? Right? Will they? I know the answer but I am not telling. It is a fun read and I encourage one to take a chance on a new author telling a good story. And yes, Jill's last line in the book is true!

I love how the relationship between all three characters progressed smoothly and naturally. It can be hard maintaining the right balance with two love interests in a menage story, but Juniper Leigh did a wonderful job.

The story was choppy at best and really didn't seem to flow By Marlania Graise For this to be a book with Alpha characters the males of the boom showed the least amount of dominant behavior I have ever read about. The story was choppy at best and really didn't seem to flow.

Excerpt from Cacao Culture in the PhilippinesSir: I submit herewith an essay on the cultivation of cacao, for the use of planters in the Philippines. This essay is prompted first, because much of the cacao grown here is of such excellent quality as to induce keen rivalry among buyers to procure it at an advance of quite 50 per cent over the common export grades of the Java bean, notwithstanding the failure on the part of the local grower to "process" or cure the product in any way; second, because in parts of Mindanao and Negros, despite ill treatment or no treatment, the plant exhibits a luxuriance of growth and wealth of productiveness that demonstrates its entire fitness for those regions and leads us to believe in the successful extension of its propagation throughout these Islands; and lastly because of the repeated calls upon the Chief of the Agricultural Bureau for literature or information bearing upon this important horticultural industry. The importance of cacao-growing in the Philippines can hardly be overestimated. Recent statistics place the world's demand for cacao (exclusive of local consumption) at 200,000,000 pounds, valued at more than $30,000,000 gold. There is little danger of overproduction and consequent low prices for very many years to come. So far as known, the areas where cacao prospers in the great equatorial zone are small, and the opening and development of suitable regions has altogether failed to keep pace with the demand. The bibliography of cacao is rather limited, and some of the best publications,1 being in french, are unavailable to many. The leading English treatise, by Professor Hart, admirable in many respects, deals mainly with conditions in Trinidad, West Indies, and is fatally defective, if not misleading, on the all-important question of pruning. The life history of the cacao, its botany, chemistry, and statistics are replete with interest, and will, perhaps, be treated in a future paper.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. In the early 1900's, it wasn't about modern machinary, it was mostly hands on. I have learned more about technique from these older writings than I have from newer books. This particular book is a great primer if you are interested in cultivating cacao in the Philippines but keep in mind, the laws are totally different now.

"Night Owls is compelling to me in three ways. As a trauma expert, Night Owls eloquently tells the story of how trauma affects a young person's life trajectory. As a sports psychotherapist, Night Owls sensitively shows the psychological struggles of a young, gifted athlete. As a writer I loved Megan Armstrong's story telling, characters and writing style. I highly recommend that you buy this book for yourself and your close friends."

-Dr. David Grand, Ph.D., psychotherapist and author

"Mental health issues have long been swept under the rug, not to be mentioned. Ever. With this book and these characters, Armstrong has thrown the rug, the broom, and every stigma out the window."

-Michelle Beadle, ESPN personality

"I cant imagine the fear a first time author must go through when their first book comes to fruition but Megan Armstrong need fear not. From the start Night Owls is enthralling, engaging and told from the heart. Knowing the drive and dedication that Megan has both for life and in her writing I expected no less. And it comes across on every page every second. I am both proud and thrilled for her as I am sure you will be as well once you read Night Owls." -Jeremy Woodard, Broadway actor

By Brandon Cavanaugh A book of fiction, but non-fiction, Night Owls is easily one of the best reads of 2015 and will likely stand the test of time. It's a must-read for a number of people.Whether you're suffering from mental illness or trying to understand someone who is. If you've been hiding who you really are and want inspiration to find a way to let that person out. For football lunatics who know that there's something beyond the game, that sometimes you have to walk away for your own good, at least for a little while. For those that lost someone far too awesome far too soon. The cast of characters is wonderful, but knowing that they're based in reality creates a unique bond between it and the reader. I made sure to carve out time each day to finish Night Owls once I started because it's jam-packed with excellent messages. I encourage you to do the same

Smith I find delight in reading literature which blurs the line between fiction and non-fiction. This book had my eyes glued and my finger ready to turn the page right from the get go. It's a concise tale, but told so well that it will leave one thinking on its topics for days and days. Megan has turned her life into an outright positive example for those suffering from mental illness. It's unlikely that her effort will lead to a deluge of books, but it is highly likely that folks will begin providing a safe place for loved ones to open up and share what is bothering them. This is a crucial first step on the road to acceptance. It's incumbent upon those of us who don't suffer from this invisible disease (who are, frankly, more likely to read this book) understand that the best thing we can do is simply listen. And accept. After taking this story to heart, I defy you to not change your mind about the character of those with mental illness. Open your heart and you will find you are more capable than you ever thought possible. Then read the book and understand the remarkable gift Megan has provided the human race. Thank you for being you, Megan. And thank you for being you, too, dear reader.

By margaret allee Insightful view of a teenage friendship, each character with a different set of obstacles to overcome ; one life threatening disease and the other suffering from the affects of anxiety and depression.
